Medical Data Team supports an industry-leading Medical team, generating and communicating compelling medical evidence that changes the practice of medicine for the benefit of patients and shapes the future of AstraZeneca (AZ). The medical data foundation (MDF) seeks to make AI ready data available to the Medical business.
The Associate Director, MDF (ADMDF) will enhance the way we capture, organize, and leverage data to surface and deliver insights, to increase business performance. We are seeking an individual to partner with IT to establish good data governance practices and develop a strategy for leveraging data to gain a deeper insight into AZ’s business
ADMDF will partner with the analytics teams, our medical stakeholders, external vendors, and our IT partners to ensure that our data assets are governed effectively enabling us to deliver seamless analytics, drive business value and maximize the value of our existing technology platforms. They will take responsibility for data product management, self-service analytics, and metrics governance.
ADMDF will operate with a high level of interactive communication, working with a broad range of partners on all levels, to set a clear direction and a data strategy. This will include working with other Data Offices to support AI enablement and build more holistic, enterprise-aligned insights
ADMDF will be working independently as well as in matrixed teams, providing leadership and defining collaborative data governance.
Results will be reached through understanding information flows on a variety of different systems, interpreting what will be the right future solutions, cooperating and influencing with both Medical stakeholders as well as Global IT to define solutions and implement in line with standards.
Working in this area will require key capabilities including advanced data management skills, healthcare industry domain knowledge, solid project management, stakeholder influencing and relationship building skills. Excellent presentation and communication skills in English will be a must.
Responsibilities:
Establish a repeatable, defined process for rapidly and efficiently onboarding new data sets into a medical data foundation consisting of several data products, ensuring the data is of high quality, aligns to our business rules and is findable and accessible to medical teams to use in analytical and AI solutions
Work with internal stakeholders to develop strategies for leveraging data to gain a deeper insight into AZ’s business, impact on patients’ journey, and customer engagement
Assist the platforms and process workstreams to define the common data model vision, data sourcing approach, data transformation approach and data reconciliation approach
Identify Data sources and drive data-related key design decisions
Monitor the quality of the data to ensure global data integrity and global reporting consistency, communicate any issues to the appropriate teams or persons
Oversee data accuracy processes, goals, assessment and effectively communicating data models to development team members to ensure proper implementation and utilization of the data structures
Query data sets to confirm/validate business rules/requirements, and ensure resolution of data conflicts between systems and within systems’ data universe
Support overall data architecture and develop, prioritize, recommend initiatives, and deploy solutions to improve and build upon the data architecture to support the business
Collaborate with IT for the data life cycle (incl. modelling efforts of Data Hub, Data Warehouse, Data Marts, or Analytic Platform projects) in support of the data target architecture
Ensure consistency of data processes and usage, and champion best practices in data management
Cooperate with vendors and multiple stakeholders on various seniority levels, across functions
Promote best practices in data management and works closely with IT, Privacy teams to ensure the strictest standards of governance (protection, security) in all aspects of data management and reporting
Understand new data privacy / data management guidelines, and drive implementation of required actions
Scan marketplace to continuously identify best-in-class data capabilities that can be adapted and leveraged by AZ
Support Medical platforms to ensure data integrity and accuracy across ingestion, transformation, and reporting workflows
Education, Qualifications, and Experience
Essential:
University degree; Masters’ degree preferred
5+ years’ experience in business analysis, financial analysis, or related field
3+ years of experience in medical data analytics
2+ of data modelling experience
Experience in working and delivering in a global organization
Experience in working on a cross functional team in a matrix organization
Pharmaceutical or healthcare industry experience
Skills and Capabilities
Essential:
Data architecture & modeling: Expert in logical/physical modeling, mappings, conformed dimensions/SCDs; experience with enterprise data platforms (e.g., Snowflake/Synapse).
Cloud data integration: 3+ years building ELT/ETL pipelines (e.g., ADF, Databricks, dbt); implemented lineage/orchestration.
Data quality & governance: Set up quality rules, monitoring, and issue resolution; ensured global reporting consistency and integrity; ability to define and maintain taxonomies, controlled vocabularies, and metadata (Relevant tools: Collibra, Alation, Informatica etc,)
SQL & validation: Advanced SQL (joins, window functions) to validate business rules and reconcile cross-system conflicts.
Privacy & compliance: Working knowledge of data protection/security; partnered with IT/Privacy to implement controls.
Stakeholder leadership & communication: Influence across Medical, IT, vendors; present complex topics clearly to all levels; record of strong facilitation skills to align cross-functional teams on standards and definitions
Project delivery in matrixed/global teams: Plan, prioritize, and deliver multi-workstream programs; manage resources and outcomes; evidence of strong problem-solving skills to bring clarity in ambiguous environments
AI& LLMs: Experience building/deploying models for medical text; understanding of how data underpins analytics/ML and AI-ready datasets and familiarity with concepts like taxonomies, ontologies, knowledge graphs, and semantic structures
Preferred:
Python & automation: Python and SQL for data engineering/validation
Business performance management: Define OKRs/metrics; track value realization.
