Staff Software Engineer, Cloud Bigtable

Cloud Bigtable is a cornerstone of the Google Cloud database portfolio, focusing on the NoSQL and Big Data market. It powers Google’s services, including Search, Maps, and Gmail providing the scalability and millisecond latency required for global enterprise workloads. Bigtable offers a wide-column storage model that scales to petabytes with HBase Application Programming Interface (API) compatibility. It integrates with the Google Cloud ecosystem, including BigQuery, Vertex Artificial Intelligence (AI), tenable data processing and AI workflows.
The Bigtable Engineering team develops the distributed storage engine, global replication, and query routing layers. The India team specifically drives the database control plane, kernel, and ecosystem integration. Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
- 8 years of experience in software development.
- 5 years of experience in testing/launching products, with 3 years of experience in software architecture.
- Experience in NoSQL internals, wide-column stores, or distributed storage systems (e.g., Bigtable, HBase, Cassandra).
- Experience in performance-critical C++ and low-level resource management.
- Experience with deploying and managing cloud-based applications.
Preferred qualifications:
- Master’s degree or PhD in Distributed Systems or Database Internals.
- Experience defining technical charters and engineering processes for geographically distributed teams.
- Experience in leading executive engineering teams in building and operating petabyte-scale managed cloud services.
- Experience with distributed systems theory, including consensus protocols (e.g., Paxos, Raft) and global replication strategies.
