Perception Engineer, Mobility Vision, Mobility BU

Woven by Toyota · Tokyo

About Woven by Toyota
Woven by Toyota is enabling Toyota’s once-in-a-century transformation into a mobility company. Inspired by a legacy of innovating for the benefit of others, our mission is to challenge the current state of mobility through human-centric innovation — expanding what “mobility” means and how it serves society.

Our work centers on four pillars: AD/ADAS, our autonomous driving and advanced driver assist technologies; Arene, our software development platform for software-defined vehicles; Woven City, a test course for mobility; and Cloud & AI, the digital infrastructure powering our collaborative foundation. Business-critical functions empower these teams to execute, and together, we’re working toward one bold goal: a world with zero accidents and enhanced well-being for all.

TEAM

Toyota is redefining what it means to move. We're challenging the current state of mobility by enhancing the movement of people, goods, information and energy. Centered around three core concepts - A Living Laboratory™, Human-Centered, and Ever Evolving City™ - Woven City serves as a test course for mobility to fulfill our purpose of well-being for all.

We do this by bringing together a diverse community of people with a shared passion for the future of mobility to co-create, develop and refine innovative products and services. This cross-section of social infrastructure, mobility, and people provides a unique opportunity for inventors, residents and visitors to interact seamlessly with new technologies throughout daily life in an environment that emulates a real city.

Our mission is to identify the customer needs through careful validation and create new products and services to help transform Toyota into a Mobility Company.
In a dynamic and uncertain environment, members are expected to take initiative, adapt proactively, and drive their work autonomously to deliver impact. If you're detail-oriented, but thrive in an environment where you need to be scrappy, this team might be right for you.
While our team is diverse in nationality, language, and gender, we also value and respect the culture of Toyota.
We follow a hybrid workstyle, combining office and remote work. Additionally, depending on future circumstances, day trips or work assignments in Woven City (Susono, Shizuoka Prefecture) may be required.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

This is an exciting opportunity to be one of the founding engineers on a new mobility product focused on safety and zero traffic accidents. You'll build, test, and continuously improve through validations in Woven City, with plans to scale beyond upon successful validation.
You will design and build the visual processing and matching components of a system with hard constraints on latency and privacy, spanning both location intelligence and visual processing.
We're looking for someone who can navigate technical uncertainty, experiment with different approaches to find what works, balance performance with user privacy, and continuously improve through real world validation in Woven City.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and build the perception pipeline — owning the full development cycle from initial design through implementation, deployment, and operation
  • Design and implement matching and ranking algorithms — applying spatial and temporal reasoning to identify the most relevant content — and continuously refine accuracy through real world feedback
  • Design and implement privacy protection mechanisms — evaluating and applying detection and redaction techniques — working closely with the team to meet privacy governance requirements
  • Evaluate and integrate content filtering approaches (including detection algorithms if needed) to improve the relevance of delivered content through iterative experimentation
  • Drive continuous improvement through real world failure analysis and iteration, collaborate cross-functionally on architecture and integration, and own observability metrics for processing performance, accuracy, and delivery latency
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4+ years of hands-on experience in image processing, computer vision, or related engineering fields — with a track record of building and operating image processing pipelines
  • Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, Go, or similar with hands-on experience processing video and image data
  • Background in privacy-preserving image processing
  • Proven ability to optimize processing performance for latency-sensitive systems—identifying bottlenecks, experimenting with different approaches, and measuring impact
  • Experience applying ML frameworks to build and deploy image processing or detection systems
  • Experience integrating with backend systems—working across REST APIs, message queues, or streaming data platforms
  • Business Level Japanese and conversational English
  • NICE TO HAVES

  • Experience taking a product from zero to launch in a startup or small founding team
  • Background in domains such as surveillance systems,IoT, smart mobility, automotive technologies, edge computing, or similar
  • Experience with real time inference systems—model optimization, GPU utilization, or edge deployment
  • Experience working with time-series and geospatial data at scale
  • Experience deploying perception or ML workloads on cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP
  • Familiarity with containerisation and CI/CD practices for deploying and operating ML or image processing pipelines
