Job Summary:
CycloKinetics is seeking an Electrical Engineering Intern (EE Intern) to support the Controls Engineering team in the implementation and commission of electrical and control systems within our biorefinery operations. This role is temporary, working through the summer Monday – Friday 8 hours daily / 40 hours weekly.
This is an entry-level role that supports the design, development, testing, and maintenance of electrical and electronic equipment, components, and systems within our biorefinery operations. This position provides hands-on experience applying engineering principles to analyze problems, assist in developing solutions, and support implementation efforts across a range of projects.
The EE intern will work closely with controls engineers and multidisciplinary teams to assist with PLC-based systems, instrumentation, electrical, and data line integration efforts. The ideal candidate is motivated, detail-oriented, and interested in applying electrical and controls engineering principles in a real-world industrial environment.
This role is ideal for a motivated learner who is developing strong organizational and communication skills and is eager to contribute to team-based problem solving.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Strong commitment to safety is required.
- Perform job duties in a safety-regulated environment where chemicals are used.
- Assist in the implementation and deployment of electrical and control systems, including instrumentation, data lines, and PLC-based architectures.
- Support creation and modification of electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and documentation.
- Assist with panel design, I/O mapping, and field device integration.
- Participate in system testing, including loop checks, calibration, and validation of instruments and analyzers.
- Support commissioning and startup activities for new and modified systems.
- Work with engineers and technicians to troubleshoot electrical and control system issues.
- Assist with data collection, analysis, and documentation to support system performance improvements.
- Support development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and technical documentation.
- Ensure compliance with internal standards, industry regulations, and safety requirements, including OSHA and other government policies and regulations.
- Participate in meetings and planning sessions, providing work updates or summaries as requested.
- Work is performed on-site at your designated work location.
- Maintain accurate and complete records, test results, and data, in accordance with company guidelines on documentation, storage, and control.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Manager/Supervisor or designated leadership.
Education and Experience:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Basic understanding of electrical systems and circuits.
- Comfortable with working on electrical equipment up to 480VAC.
- Comfortable with basic electrical tools (soldering, crimping, etc).
- Interest in industrial automation, PLCs, and instrumentation.
- Familiarity with electrical schematics and engineering drawings.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication skills and willingness to learn in a fast-paced environment.
- Comfortable with exposure to industrial, manufacturing, or chemical processing environments.
- Assist in the design and development of electrical systems.
- Demonstrated proficiency in common computer tools and web-based applications.
- Highly detail-oriented and organized, with a proactive, self-driven approach and demonstrated record of taking initiative to drive scientific and operational goals.
Physical Demands: Frequent lifting and moving of items up to fifty (50) pounds*, bending, reaching above shoulder level, climbing stairs, pulling, prolonged standing or sitting may be required. Must have safe work habits and perform all duties in accordance with company safety policies. Personal protective equipment is provided by the company, and its use is mandatory.
