Senior Data Engineer - Customer Signals & Instrumentation
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Data Engineer – Customer Signals & Instrumentation based in Canada.
This is a foundational engineering role focused on building the customer data backbone that powers product, marketing, and growth decisions at scale. You will join a newly formed team responsible for designing and owning the systems that capture, structure, and deliver customer event data across the organization. The work spans instrumentation standards, event pipelines, identity resolution, attribution, and data governance, with a strong emphasis on consistency and reliability. You will help define the long-term architecture while also improving and stabilizing existing systems built incrementally across teams. This role sits at the intersection of engineering, analytics, marketing, and product, requiring strong cross-functional collaboration. It is an opportunity to shape how customer signals are collected and used across a fast-growing, high-impact SaaS environment.
Accountabilities:
- Design, build, and maintain end-to-end customer data infrastructure, including event collection systems, pipelines, and integrations that deliver data into downstream analytics and warehouse systems.
- Define and evolve instrumentation standards across engineering, product, and marketing, ensuring consistency in event naming, structure, validation, and versioning.
- Own and improve the data collection layer, including CDP tooling, ingestion infrastructure, and event tracking systems, while evaluating long-term architectural direction.
- Lead identity resolution and attribution modeling across fragmented customer journeys spanning multiple domains, platforms, and touchpoints.
- Develop and enforce schema governance and data quality frameworks to ensure reliable, trustworthy customer signals across the organization.
- Work within privacy and consent constraints to design compliant tracking systems, including coordination with consent management and tag management platforms.
- Partner closely with marketing, analytics, BI, product, and engineering teams to support campaign tracking, funnel analysis, and growth measurement.
- Evaluate and improve existing instrumentation and event pipelines, rationalizing inconsistencies and consolidating fragmented implementations.
- Contribute to tooling strategy, including CDP evaluation, event pipeline modernization, and integration architecture decisions.
- Establish lightweight review and governance processes to ensure new events and data sources meet defined standards before production release.
- 5+ years of experience in data engineering, customer data platforms, or event-driven data infrastructure in production environments.
- University degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related STEM field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Proven experience working with customer data infrastructure, including event pipelines, instrumentation systems, or data collection frameworks.
- Hands-on experience evaluating, implementing, or migrating Customer Data Platforms in real-world environments.
- Strong understanding of schema design, event taxonomy, and data quality best practices.
- Experience with identity resolution, cross-domain tracking, and attribution systems at scale.
- Familiarity with privacy-compliant tracking, consent management systems, and tag management tools (e.g., OneTrust, GTM Server-Side, or similar).
- Strong proficiency in SQL and JavaScript/TypeScript, with Python as a strong asset.
- Experience working with cloud data warehouses and analytics tools (e.g., Snowflake, Looker, or similar).
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly across engineering, product, marketing, and analytics teams.
- Collaborative mindset with the ability to define and drive standards across multiple stakeholders.
- Comfortable using AI tools as part of daily engineering and development workflows.
- Competitive compensation with a salary range of $121,600 to $190,000 CAD, with most hires typically starting around $144,400 CAD.
- Remote-first work environment across Canada, the US, and the UK.
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage.
- Strong focus on professional growth, with structured compensation increases tied to development and impact.
- Flexible work culture emphasizing autonomy, ownership, and trust.
- Opportunity to build foundational data infrastructure powering thousands of real-world users and workflows.
- Exposure to modern data tooling, AI-assisted engineering practices, and large-scale event systems.
- Inclusive, mission-driven environment focused on collaboration and continuous learning.
