Notion is the collaborative AI workspace where teams and agents think together. We're building one place where your knowledge, projects, meetings, and AI tools live side by side, so work is faster, clearer, and less fragmented. Millions of individuals, small teams, and large companies run their work on Notion.
Notinos (our employees) are customer zero in bringing this future of work to life. We care about craft, building things that last, and the belief that great work is still fundamentally human. Our goal isn’t to ship the next feature. Each and every team of Notinos is working to set the standard for how humans work together in the AI era. From building a business’s system of record to making and managing AI agents to automating away the busy work, we care deeply about giving our customers more time for their life’s work.
Notion's Professional Services team owns the most technical customer engagements in Japan, and we're hiring a Forward Deployed Engineer (formerly "Technical Architect") to be the technical owner for our most complex work. You'll partner directly with strategic customers to design and ship migrations, bespoke integrations, and production-grade AI workflows built on Notion Workers, Custom Agents, and MCP. You'll work alongside Account Executives, Solutions Engineers, Customer Success, and Engineering to turn messy requirements into solutions that stick, then turn what you learn into repeatable playbooks and product feedback. This is hands-on building inside real customer environments, not advisory work.
This role is based in Tokyo, Japan. We work from our offices on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays (our Anchor Days) because we do our best thinking and building together in person. We're looking for someone who's excited to work alongside the team during those days.
The big bet: strategic customers in Japan adopt Notion as a central platform with confidence, because delivery is fast, reliable, and repeatable.
By day 90, own and ship at least one end-to-end migration or integration workstream, from technical discovery through cutover, leaving behind a documented runbook the team can reuse.
By day 90, launch one production-grade AI workflow in Notion using Workers, Custom Agents, and MCP (often integrating with tools like Jira, GitHub, Salesforce, or data warehouses), with clear guardrails for safe execution.
By the end of your first year, establish multiple stable, governable AI-in-production patterns that other engineers can reuse across customers, and feed the learnings back into playbooks and product feedback loops.
By the end of your first year, raise the bar on how Professional Services delivers by improving reliability, cost awareness, and documentation so the function scales beyond any one person.
Hands-on, customer-facing engineering experience: you translate ambiguous requirements into working software in real customer environments and explain trade-offs clearly to both technical and business audiences.
Fluency in at least one programming language such as TypeScript/Node.js, Python, JavaScript, or Java, and comfort shipping scripts, tools, and integrations rather than only advising.
Practical experience building with APIs and data integrations (auth, pagination, transforms, error handling, idempotency), plus fluency with formats like JSON and YAML and query languages like SQL.
Strong technical judgment and operating discipline: you design for permissions, governance, observability, and safe action execution.
High agency and learning velocity: you move comfortably between paid delivery and investment work, build leverage through reusable patterns, and use AI tools to raise the quality of your thinking and craft.

You don’t need deep AI expertise for every role, but we do expect every Notino to be intellectually curious, drawn to tinkering and discovery, and excited to use AI as a real collaborator in their work. For some roles, AI fluency is a core requirement — when that’s the case, we'll say so explicitly in the qualifications. People who thrive here don’t treat AI as a novelty. They use it to think better, and make their work easier for others to build on.
