Join the Fulfillment Optimization team and help drive optimization of Amazon's outbound volume for maximized flow efficiency! You will will be leading systems that calibrate continuous optimization of Amazon package flow, handle hundreds of millions of orders per week globally, capture and visualize big data from the order and shipment flow, and simulate what-if scenarios that help make billion dollar decisions.
Today, Amazon fulfillment network faces new challenges associated with faster-than-ever speeds, and higher-than-ever volumes. Amazon fulfills most of orders using First Party network resources, which represent sunk cost investment that needs to be utilized to the full. This calls for a shift from myopic problem of per-package assignment to solving global optimality problems, sometimes resulting in making intelligent suboptimal choices locally for the sake of globally optimal network that follows a well-coordinated system built around a consistent set of goals.
This space requires a high level of strategy, engagement, execution, and operations to evolve the fulfillment capabilities for the next decade and solve 21st century problems with 21st century technologies. This initiative is fundamental to Amazon’s future success, and will provide great personal satisfaction and career development as we tackle some of the most intriguing transportation problems.
The perfect candidate will thrive outside of defined role guidelines, practice bar-raising ownership, make sacrifices to achieve strategic success, elevate their subordinates, manage upwards, and be able to explain their space to a 5-year-old.
Key job responsibilities
A successful candidate will need to be equally comfortable leading SVP level reviews as they are interacting with engineers. The top three LPs to be successful in the team are:

Clearly define complex issues despite incomplete or ambiguous information. Identify underlying issues and root causes of problems. Weigh pros and cons of different solutions, often with incomplete data.
A day in the life
You will be continuously partnering with product and science partners to perform and review science experimentations, innovate in mathematical optimization algorithms that you own, roll out new experiments in a controlled fashion and iterate quickly over treatment-and-control scenarios, and own high scale optimizer and simulator systems that are critical for continuous business operations and insights. You will help bring the right data to support or challenge hypotheses, and ideate on new experiments and optimization opportunities that can help improve flow control, or bring new insights into where opportunities are lurking. You will partner across multiple teams to perform game days and scale systems for Amazon big sale events, and peak purchasing periods.

About the team
Fulfillment Optimization Control team owns a massive, bold charter and is responsible for the following key directions that drive significant profit improvements at Amazon scale:
- Optimizing For Network Complexity. The network grows horizontally, gaining new nodes and routes, as well as vertically, gaining fidelity and complexity in its representation. Our understanding of the infinite space of logistics grows daily, and new solutions to customers’ problems emerge that challenge our systems in sophisticated ways. How do we build durable solutions to keep up and get ahead of this pace?
- Optimizing for Connectivity and Design. To solve the problem of connected transportation network that drives globally optimal decisions, Fulfillment Optimization systems need to be aware of all transportation resources and each other. This is both an exercise in breadth and depth, which will require us to build partnerships, dive deep, and build to scale. How do we build consolidated systems that work synergistically towards a strategic goal?
- Optimizing For Capacity. At its heart, fulfillment produces customer value by consuming network resources. How do we plan to utilize these resources efficiently, leaving nothing on the table while avoiding over-using procured capacity? How do we intelligently react to shifts in demand or sudden changes in the network? How do we prevent churn for our business partners in the field?- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
- 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
