About your role:

Our Customer Engagement team is dedicated to building tools that help merchants connect with their customers, drive loyalty, and grow their businesses. As a Backend Engineer on this team, you will focus on scaling and expanding our customer engagement platform, loyalty systems, and reward mechanics. You will work closely with the Infrastructure, Product, and Design teams in an iterative, agile environment to deliver seamless merchant-facing features across multiple parts of the backend stack.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead the development of Clover’s cutting-edge Customer Engagement platform, loyalty programs, and core backend ecosystems to drive platform evolution.
  • Design, build, and maintain highly scalable REST APIs and microservices for mobile and web clients, including our smart payment devices, merchant dashboards, and 3rd-party app integrations.
  • Partner with product managers and designers to identify technical requirements, assist with realistic project planning, and translate business objectives into clean, maintainable, and extensible software.
  • Take full ownership of merchant-facing features and engagement services from initial design and development through to deployment and production monitoring.
  • Participate in rigorous system design and code reviews to ensure high code quality, security, and performance across the team.
  • Collaborate with the Infrastructure team to design data models that support large-scale, highly available engagement services.
  • Work hand-in-hand with QA to develop robust test plans/strategies and participate in an on-call rotation to maintain system uptime and high availability.
  • Responsibilities listed are not intended to be all-inclusive and may be modified as necessary.

Experience you’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 10+ years of hands-on professional software development experience, with a proven track record of delivering complex, production-grade backend systems.
  • Strong coding skills within the JVM ecosystem; Java is our primary language of choice.
  • Extensive experience building microservices and web services using Spring Boot.
  • Hands-on experience building and deploying application containers using Kubernetes, along with practical knowledge of provisioning and managing infrastructure via Terraform.
  • Strong working knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases, including query optimization and schema design.
  • Deep expertise in designing and implementing robust, secure, and performant RESTful APIs.
  • Ability to write clean, testable, and high-performance code that easily scales with high transaction volumes.
  • Superior problem-solving, debugging, and communication skills—you can explain complex technical ideas clearly and collaborate effectively across teams.

Experience that would be great to have:

  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, preferably Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Prior experience building customer loyalty, CRM, promotion engines, or marketing automation platforms.
  • Knowledge of or exposure to Generative AI concepts, LLM integrations, or building AI-driven features for customer personalization and engagement.
  • Familiarity with leveraging modern software productivity tools and AI coding assistants (e.g., GitHub Copilot, advanced IDE plugins) to optimize workflow efficiency, accelerate debugging, and boost overall development output.

How you’ll work:

  • This role is on-site Monday through Friday. Fiserv considers in-person collaboration to be an essential part of this role as in-person office experiences help you with your overall onboarding experience and leads to stronger productivity.
  • This role requires use of a computer and audio equipment.
