About the Role
Reporting to the Technical Service Manager, the Workplace Engineer is a member of the School Infrastructure team within the Digital Workspace for Schools Branch (DWSB) at MOE's Digital Excellence & Products Division (DXD). In this role, you will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to deliver services and projects that support the overall availability and reliability of ICT infrastructure, services, and applications for schools' operations.
You will take ownership of moderate-scale infrastructure services, ensuring their availability, scalability, performance, and security. You are expected to work independently — designing, implementing, and operating infrastructure solutions with minimal guidance — while contributing meaningfully to the team's goals and the Ministry's broader digitalisation objectives.
[What you will be working on]
Service and Operations Management
You are responsible for Service Management, Incident and Problem Management, and Disaster Recovery Plans for ICT services supporting schools. You manage contractors in terms of deliverables, ensuring that contract obligations and service level agreements (SLAs) are met. You continuously monitor and improve ICT services to meet the current and future needs of schools, and actively engage schools to manage expectations and enhance the user service journey.
You ensure that governance and quality requirements are adhered to, including compliance with Technical Architecture standards, security policies, and Government IT policies. You contribute to the Ministry Family Digitalisation Plan as part of the broader MOE IT Division.
Craft and Execution
You execute infrastructure tasks with confidence and minimal errors, developing automation solutions that are modular and reusable. You are proficient in infrastructure-as-code and apply it consistently across deployments and changes. You contribute to robust monitoring, alerting, and observability setups, and use data and analytics to troubleshoot and improve system performance. You apply site reliability engineering (SRE) concepts — including error budgets, SLI/SLO frameworks, and toil reduction — as part of your day-to-day work.
You develop and maintain procedures for the installation, configuration, and management of end-user computing devices and enterprise software, ensuring they meet functional, security, and policy requirements. You contribute to agency-wide standards that promote consistency, compliance, and ease of support across user environments and platforms.
You manage centralised deployment and updates for enterprise software, and evaluate end-user computing devices, enterprise software, and endpoint protection management applications against policy requirements. You assess trade-offs across usability, security, and operational effort, iterating on designs based on production feedback and system behaviour. You also develop tools and scripts to automate agency-wide device and software management.
You drive tasks from planning through to completion independently, proactively identifying and resolving issues before they escalate. You monitor and validate the impact of your work — whether in production or proof-of-concept environments — incorporating user feedback and following up on bug reports. You communicate risks early and propose solutions to your team leads.
Ownership
You take full ownership of your assigned tasks and projects, identifying and addressing issues proactively with minimal guidance. You know
when to seek help and from whom. You look for opportunities to improve processes and outcomes within your own work, and actively support peers when needed.
Strategic Alignment
You align your work with team goals and priorities, focusing on tasks that deliver the most expected business value. You adapt independently to shifting priorities and ensure your contributions remain relevant to the team's strategy and the Ministry's digitalisation direction.
Culture and Organisation
You collaborate effectively with peers and stakeholders — both internal and external — to ensure tasks are executed well. You address minor conflicts constructively and respectfully, and suggest improvements that enhance team effectiveness. You share knowledge, resources, successes, and failures openly, contributing to a culture of transparency and continuous learning.
[What we are looking for]
You are a proficient infrastructure engineer with hands-on experience in modern workplace engineering practices, including observability, infrastructure automation, and site reliability engineering. You are comfortable making technical decisions independently and can apply your knowledge to improve the reliability, performance, and security of the systems you own. You are a collaborative team player who takes initiative, communicates clearly, and is invested in both your own growth and the success of those around you. Experience working in a government or education sector environment, and familiarity with government IT governance frameworks, would be advantageous.
