About Betterment

Betterment is a leading, technology-driven financial services company that offers investing, savings and retirement solutions for retail investors and investment advisors as well as financial wellness solutions, including a 401(k) for small and medium-sized businesses. Our team is passionate about our mission, to empower people to build wealth with confidence and ease.  We’re headquartered in NYC and offer hybrid NY-based positions (four days/ week in-office, with no required office days during the summer and winter holidays).

About the Role

As a Senior App Platform Engineering Manager at Betterment, you will lead the Mobile Platform team while staying deeply connected to the technical work that powers our applications. This is a unique opportunity to blend engineering leadership with hands-on mobile platform expertise — guiding a team of talented engineers building the shared frameworks, infrastructure, and tooling that mobile product teams rely on every day.

You will be the connective tissue between people leadership and technical excellence: mentoring engineers, shaping platform strategy, and rolling up your sleeves to ensure the right architectural decisions are made. Betterment’s mobile platform enables engineers across the company to ship great code confidently, and you’ll be responsible for making that possible at scale.

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees.

  • New York City: $200,000-230,000

This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus.

A Day in the Life

  • Manage a team platform mobile engineers building shared mobile frameworks, libraries, driving migrations and developer tooling that power Betterment’s customer-facing applications.
  • Foster career development and align platform roadmap opportunities with each engineer’s growth interests, keeping them technically engaged and challenged.
  • Cultivate a team culture that values agility, accountability, constructive feedback, and celebrates successes.
  • Be a hands-on technical mentor: dive into the codebase regularly, participate in code reviews, partner with stakeholders to shape solutions, and drive effective technical decision-making.
  • Lead medium-to-large scale platform initiatives — such as cross-cutting migrations and shared library rollouts — balancing tradeoffs to deliver high-quality solutions continuously and iteratively.
  • Champion maintainability and reliability by advocating for the long-term stability of the mobile platform your team builds.
  • Balance speed of delivery with correctness and quality in every project your team undertakes.
  • Continuously refine team processes and practices to deliver high-impact, high-quality outcomes for the business.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Design, Engineering, and fellow mobile engineers to ensure platform capabilities align with business and customer needs.
  • Identify and address strategic technical challenges with long-term impact across Betterment’s mobile engineering organization.
  • Develop deep domain and industry knowledge to be a highly effective partner across internal and external stakeholders.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience in formal Engineering Management of direct reports.
  • Experience building and maintaining mobile applications, with strong expertise in mobile technologies and React Native development; familiarity with the underlying iOS and Android platforms required.
  • Hands on experience designing and maintaining shared mobile libraries, frameworks, or platform infrastructure for use across multiple product teams.
  • Proven ability to be a hands-on technical contributor: comfortable reviewing code, contributing to architectural decisions, and engaging directly with the codebase when needed.
  • Experience managing, mentoring, and inspiring talented engineers, guiding them toward excellence in both professional growth and project outcomes.
  • Familiarity with React native and/or Flutter, GraphQL and mobile networking best practices.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, scalability, and performance considerations in mobile applications.
  • Experience leading large platform migrations and driving cross-team adoption.
  • A history of fostering accountability and ownership, motivating teams to take initiative and consistently deliver right-sized solutions.
  • Ability to translate business strategy into engineering initiatives that drive delivery of meaningful outcomes.
  • Strong track record leading projects, driving adoption of platform improvements, and making pragmatic tradeoffs while maintaining quality.
  • Effective collaborator capable of working with other engineering teams, product managers, design, non-technical stakeholders, and third-party vendors.
  • Passion for software engineering, developer experience, and creating what doesn’t yet exist.
  • Appreciation for agility and pragmatism in software development; ability to thrive in a startup-like environment balancing autonomy with collaboration.
