Lead Database Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Lead Database Engineer based in Canada.

This is a senior database operations and engineering role focused on managing, securing, and optimizing large-scale cloud database systems supporting mission-critical financial and collections platforms. You will work across MSSQL, MySQL, and PostgreSQL environments deployed on AWS, ensuring high availability, performance, and reliability across production systems. The role requires deep hands-on expertise in database administration, performance tuning, and cloud infrastructure management, with a strong focus on operational excellence and SLA adherence. You will collaborate closely with DevOps, product support, and engineering teams to resolve incidents, implement changes, and improve overall database resilience. The environment is highly dynamic, requiring strong ownership, proactive troubleshooting, and the ability to operate in on-call rotations. This role also involves mentoring junior engineers and helping define best practices for enterprise-grade database operations.

Accountabilities:

  • Manage, maintain, and optimize MSSQL, MySQL, and PostgreSQL databases deployed across AWS cloud environments.
  • Ensure high availability, disaster recovery readiness, backup, and restoration processes are fully operational and aligned with enterprise standards.
  • Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement tuning strategies for RDS and Aurora-based systems.
  • Execute database installations, upgrades, schema changes, and production deployments while ensuring minimal disruption.
  • Develop and enforce database security standards, access controls, and compliance practices across environments.
  • Automate repetitive database operations and improve operational efficiency through scripting and tooling.
  • Collaborate with DevOps, support, and engineering teams to resolve incidents, manage on-call responsibilities, and maintain SLAs.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentor junior DBAs, and help define best practices for database operations and support.
  • Requirements:

    • 12 plus years of IT experience with at least 10 plus years in database administration roles.
    • Extensive hands-on experience with MSSQL, MySQL, and PostgreSQL in enterprise environments.
    • Strong expertise in AWS cloud services, particularly RDS, Aurora, EC2, IAM, and VPC.
    • Solid experience in database performance tuning, monitoring, troubleshooting, and capacity planning.
    • Strong understanding of high availability and disaster recovery architectures for relational databases.
    • Experience working with Linux and Windows server environments.
    • Knowledge of SQL Server Reporting Services and ability to troubleshoot reporting issues.
    • Experience with automation, scripting, and managing cloud-based database infrastructure.
    • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field preferred.
    • Experience in banking or financial services environments is an advantage.
