Senior Staff Software Engineer

As part of the ECS Technology team, you will collaborate with cross-functional delivery teams including Product Owners, Engineering Managers, Engineers, Designers, and Quality Assurance specialists. You will provide senior technical leadership across teams, ensuring the delivery of secure, scalable, and cloud-native solutions aligned with Experian standards and platform strategy.

You will operate as a technical authority across your domain, guiding architectural decisions, driving measurable technical improvements, and coaching engineers to continuously raise the bar on quality, innovation, and performance.

Role Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced and influential Staff Engineer to provide technical leadership across one or more engineering domains.

This is a senior individual contributor role focused on technical excellence, architectural oversight, compliance, innovation, and capability development. You will act as a role model across teams, mentoring engineers, driving measurable improvements, and ensuring our domain remains secure, resilient, and aligned with Experian policies and standards.

You will balance customer needs, user experience, delivery timelines, and long-term technical health while guiding teams through change and ambiguity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and drive measurable technical improvement and innovation across the ECS Tech platform and your domain.

  • Ensure applications and services are fully compliant with Experian standards, security policies, and governance requirements.

  • Support teams in identifying and executing plans to bring systems back into policy where required.

  • Act as a technical authority in architectural discussions, refinement sessions, code reviews, and documentation standards.

  • Coach and mentor engineers across multiple teams, delivering tangible improvements in skills and technical capability.

  • Partner with Engineering Managers to identify knowledge and performance gaps and support development plans to address them.

  • Drive the adoption and effective use of technical metrics to proactively identify risks, improve performance, and increase engineering quality.

  • Guide teams in managing ambiguity, navigating change, and delivering during business transformation initiatives.

  • Collaborate with senior stakeholders to define and refine technical roadmaps aligned to the financial year and broader ECS strategy.

  • Encourage smart risk-taking, experimentation, and continuous improvement.

  • Promote strong cross-domain collaboration to ensure solutions meet customer and business needs.

  • Stay informed on emerging industry trends and the wider Experian technical horizon, sharing insights within your domain.

  • Act as a role model for communication, professionalism, and technical excellence across all levels of the organisation.

Qualifications & Skills

  • 14+ years of experience in software engineering, data engineering, or SDET roles within enterprise environments.

  • Proven experience driving architectural design and technical strategy across multiple teams or domains.

  • Strong background in secure software development and enterprise compliance standards.

  • Extensive experience with cloud-native architectures (AWS and/or Azure) and microservices-based systems.

  • Deep understanding of DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and reliability engineering.

  • Experience using technical metrics (e.g., DORA metrics, reliability metrics, quality indicators) to drive measurable improvements.

  • Strong expertise in modern engineering stacks such as .NET Core, Node.js, React, and cloud services including AWS (EC2, Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, SNS, SQS) or Azure equivalents.

  • Experience influencing engineering standards across distributed teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop senior engineers and technical leads.

  • Strong understanding of security, resilience, scalability, and performance best practices.

  • Experience operating in complex, multi-team, multi-location environments.
