Automation and Equipment Engineering Intern

The Position:

Veracyte is seeking an exceptional candidate for a summer internship in the Automation and Equipment Engineering teams. The Automation team is responsible for designing, programming, implementing, and maintaining complex automated liquid handling methods to support cancer patient diagnostics.  Additionally, the Equipment Engineering team is responsible for the calibration, verification, validation, reliability, and repair of common and complex equipment within Veracyte’s laboratories. This role is a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on, applied skills in the cutting-edge field of Laboratory Automation and Equipment Engineering, gaining experience with industry-leading equipment and tools. The role will be part time, 20-30 hours a week, for approximately 12 weeks from June-September at our labs in San Diego, California.

What You’ll do:  

  • Support process improvement and automation projects within the laboratory
  • Explore development of lab automation scripts and integration with multiple devices using python
  • Assist with inventory management of equipment spare parts
  • Maintain a safe and organized lab environment, strictly adhering to all safety and quality protocols
  • Present project progress, data, and technical insights to the team and department

Who You Are:

You are curious, organized, and motivated to learn by doing. You enjoy solving practical problems, working with both software and physical systems, and contributing as part of a team. Candidates must be able to work from 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday in our San Diego, CA laboratory facilities.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, biology, or a related technical field minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Working knowledge of Python
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to follow written procedures and document work clearly
  • Comfortable working in a laboratory or technical environment
  • Previous lab experience in biotech or working in an academic lab is a plus
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to collaborate across teams

The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to years of experience, skillset, geographic location, industry, education, etc. Base pay is one part of the Total Package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work, and this role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives, and restricted stock units.

Pay range
$23—$27 USD
