Scope of Work
The Dosimetrist is a member of the radiation oncology team who has knowledge of the overall characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology treatment machines and equipment, is cognizant of procedures commonly used in brachytherapy, external beam radiation therapy treatments, protons, and any other additional techniques for the treatment of patients in Radiation Oncology department. The medical dosimetrist is responsible for designing a treatment plan and carrying out calculations with mathematical accuracy for the delivery of radiation treatment based on the radiation oncologist's prescribed course of radiation therapy. This treatment plan takes into consideration tumor pathology, tumor volume and inherent dose-limiting structures surrounding the tumor. Once a treatment plan is complete the medical dosimetrist will work closely with the radiation therapists in the implementation of the prescribed plan. A medical dosimetrist has the education and expertise necessary to generate radiation dose distribution and dose calculations in collaboration with the medical physicist and radiation oncologist. Provides support and assists in simulations, quality assurance initiatives, billing, departmental meetings, and the teaching of dosimetry students in the dosimetry program.
