Certified Orthopedic Technician - Full-time; Sports Medicine

The Certified Orthopedic Technician supports physicians in all aspects of clinic; including fitting and applying pre-operative braces, crutches and other soft goods; preparing and applying casts and orthopedic appliances; and removing sutures, casts and splints. Documents and bills appropriate casting and splint visits. May also assist with orthopedic procedures, including wound care, aspirations, minor surgical procedures and fracture reductions; may give patients instructions concerning cast care and the use of orthopedic appliances; may prepare and set up traction as requested by the physician and can assess patients in traction, detect deficiencies in the equipment and make adjustments as needed; may clean and stock the cast and soft goods room, order special supplies or equipment, and coordinate collection of patient data.

Education/Training

  • Minimum two years working under the supervision of an orthopedic surgeon or graduate of a NAOT certified program

License/Certification:

  • Registered Orthopedic Technologist through the American Society of Orthopedic Professionals or National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Technologists Inc

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in Orthopedics.

  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology

  • Expertise in the different materials and equipment involved in casts, splints and braces

  • Ability to independently apply and remove casts, splints and braces under supervision of a medical provider

  • Commitment to patient experience and quality improvement in the outpatient setting

  • Ability to obtain a basic medical history including chief complaint, medication history, social history, and family history

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Completion of an ASOP Casting Workshop or equivalent preferred

  • Graduate of a two-year accredited Medical Assistant program preferred

  • Ability to assist in inbox management and refills according to SH policy

  • Familiarity with Cerner EMR environment

Essential Job Functions:

  • Troubleshoot, apply, and remove casts, splints and braces under supervision of a medical provider

  • Clinical responsibilities include rooming patients, taking vitals, procedures, prescription renewals, triage of patient phone calls, review charts, lab test results, scheduling patients, responding to provider messages

  • Prepare the medical chart including importing medications from pharmacy, preloading vaccines, documenting pre-visit forms

  • Assist in inbox management and refills according to SMA policy

  • Interact with patients in promoting an excellent patient experience

  • Assist in completing paperwork by gathering data and preparing forms for provider review and signature

  • Perform other administrative tasks and clinical care as assigned.

Able to lift, push, pull without restrictions; able to use proper body mechanics.  Able to work extra hours, including some weekend/holiday rotations.  Exposure to blood or other infectious materials, as well as cleaning and hydrotherapy chemical per OSHA definition in associates-based rehab. program.

Salary Range: $22.35-$33.98

For annual salaries this is based on full-time employment.
