DRG Clinical Documentation Educator

This role plays a critical part in strengthening clinical documentation integrity across healthcare organizations by ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance in DRG assignment and coding practices. You will serve as a subject matter expert, bridging clinical, coding, and revenue cycle teams to improve documentation quality and support appropriate reimbursement outcomes. The position combines education, auditing, and process improvement, with a strong focus on developing training programs for Clinical Documentation Specialists and clinical staff. You will design and deliver targeted education for diverse healthcare audiences, from providers to coding teams, ensuring alignment with regulatory and industry standards. A key aspect of the role involves reviewing medical records, identifying opportunities for documentation improvement, and supporting clinical validation efforts. You will collaborate closely with leadership to enhance CDI workflows, policies, and compliance frameworks. This is a high-impact, remote role for a clinically experienced professional passionate about education, accuracy, and healthcare quality improvement.

Accountabilities:

  • Lead onboarding, training, and ongoing education programs for Clinical Documentation Specialists (CDSs), ensuring consistent knowledge development and performance improvement.
  • Develop and deliver tailored education sessions for providers, coders, nursing staff, and other clinical stakeholders to improve documentation accuracy and compliance.
  • Perform detailed medical record reviews to assess severity of illness, risk of mortality, and clinical validation of diagnoses and procedures.
  • Identify documentation gaps and make compliant recommendations and queries aligned with AHIMA and ACDIS guidelines.
  • Support the design, maintenance, and continuous improvement of CDI policies, procedures, and educational materials in collaboration with leadership.
  • Conduct audits of CDS performance and provide individualized coaching and development plans based on quality outcomes.
  • Ensure adherence to coding standards, regulatory requirements, and DRG assignment accuracy while staying current on industry updates.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with CDI leadership, clinicians, and revenue cycle teams to optimize documentation integrity and program effectiveness.
  • Requirements:

    • 3+ years of experience in clinical documentation improvement, coding, or revenue cycle-related roles within a healthcare environment.
    • Clinical background as an RN or MD, or equivalent healthcare experience with strong clinical understanding.
    • Active certification such as CCS, CPC, CPMA, RHIA, or RHIT (CRCR certification required within 9 months of hire).
    • Strong knowledge of DRG systems, clinical documentation integrity principles, and coding guidelines including AHIMA and ACDIS standards.
    • Experience working with multiple EMR systems such as Epic, Cerner, or Meditech preferred.
    • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to deliver education to diverse clinical and administrative audiences.
    • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and ability to interpret complex medical records and clinical data.
    • Highly organized, self-motivated, and comfortable working in a remote environment with occasional onsite travel as needed.
    • Openness to innovation and process improvement, including the use of emerging technologies such as AI.
