Field Applications Scientist – Life Science Mass Spectrometry (ANZ) 

Division: Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry 

Territory: Australia and New Zealand, based on the Eastern Coast of Australia 

Position Summary 

We are seeking a highly motivated Field Applications Scientist to support our Life Science Mass Spectrometry portfolio across Australia and New Zealand, to be base on the East Coast of Australia. 

This role supports LC-MS workflows across Proteomics, Lipidomics, Metabolomics, targeted small-molecule analysis, biopharmaceutical characterisation, clinical research, food safety and environmental testing. The successful candidate will work closely with customers, sales teams, service teams and business partners to deliver scientific expertise, application support, workflow optimisation and technical training that drive customer success and business growth. 

The role requires a high degree of autonomy, initiative and learning agility. The successful candidate will be expected to rapidly develop expertise across new technologies, software platforms, applications and workflows through self-directed and formal learning, scientific literature, hands-on experimentation and collaboration with internal and external subject matter experts. Success in this role requires curiosity, customer focus and a willingness to solve complex scientific problems in environments where formal training may be limited. 

Key Responsibilities:

Customer and Application Support 

  • Provide pre-sales and post-sales technical support for Thermo Fisher Scientific Life Science Mass Spectrometry solutions in Australia and New Zealand. 

  • Deliver customer demonstrations, seminars, workshops and training programmes. 

  • Support customers in developing, optimising and troubleshooting analytical workflows and methods. 

  • Formulate and execute structured consultancy towards customer application success. 

  • Translate complex scientific concepts into practical solutions and customer value. 

  • Build trusted relationships with customers and become a recognised scientific partner within the region. 

Technical Expertise 

  • Provide technical support across current and legacy Thermo Fisher LC-MS systems, associated software and nano, micro and conventional flow HPLC/UHPLC platforms. 

  • Develop and maintain expertise across multiple application areas including Proteomics, Lipidomics, Metabolomics, Biopharma, Clinical Research, Food Safety and Environmental Analysis. 

  • Stay current with emerging scientific trends, technologies and competitive developments. 

  • Generate and share technical knowledge, application insights and best practices with customers and internal teams. 

Business Partnership 

  • Uphold Thermo Fisher Scientific 4i Values. 

  • Partner closely with sales teams to support opportunity development, qualification and closure. 

  • Contribute to business growth through technical leadership, customer engagement and identification of new application opportunities. 

  • Support product launches and strategic growth initiatives. 

  • Collaborate effectively with regional and global business units, product managers and technical experts.

Qualifications and Experience 

Minimum Requirements 

  • Advanced degree with 5+ years of relevant experience. 

  • Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Life Sciences or a related scientific discipline. 

  • Hands-on experience with LC-MS instrumentation and associated analytical workflows. 

  • Experience developing, troubleshooting and optimising analytical methods. 

  • Strong scientific problem-solving and critical thinking skills. 

Preferred Experience 

  • Experience with Thermo Fisher Scientific mass spectrometry platforms and software. 

  • Experience in one or more of the following application areas listed in Technical Expertise. 

  • Experience delivering structured training, scientific presentations and technical workshops. 

  • Experience supporting customers in regulated laboratory environments.

Travel Requirements 

  • Willingness to travel extensively throughout Australia and New Zealand (approximately 50%, higher when required). 

  • Valid Australian driver's license. 

  • Valid passport and ability to travel internationally when required.
