Trade Compliance Specialist/Coordinator (Contractor)

Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America, Inc. is seeking a Trade Compliance Specialist/Coordinator to support the development and operation of its trade compliance program, with a focus on export controls applicable to software, encryption, and technology classification. This role will work closely with a trade compliance attorney, engineering teams, and business stakeholders to support classification, licensing, recordkeeping, end-use/end-user diligence, audits, and training activities.

This is a remote position based in the United States. The role may require occasional travel for team meetings and business needs. This is a contract position with the potential for extension based on business needs.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Classification Support: Analyze software features to determine if items fall under EAR or ITAR and assign correct ECCNs as well as collect information to determine Country of Origin, HTS and Schedule B codes, and Supplier Declaration Forms.
  • End Use/End User Verifications: Prepare and collect information to verify end use and end user of commodities/services; identify and address red flags that may arise and document accordingly. 
  • Encryption Review Support: Assist in analyzing software functionality to determine whether software uses, develops, or produces encryption, which may require licensing or notifications to the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS). 
  • Technology Analysis: Partner with software development teams to support compliant software releases to international customers. Reviewing software source code, object code, and related technical documentation for export restrictions. Collaborate with software development and engineering teams to understand functionality for accurate classification. 
  • License Determination and Application Support: Assist in assessing whether an export, transfer, or release requires a license or qualifies for a license exception (e.g., TSU, ENC) and support preparation and submission of export license applications. 
  • Recordkeeping & Compliance Auditing: Maintain accurate and complete trade compliance records and conduct export audits to identify risks and ensure adherence to U.S. and foreign/export regulations.
  • Project Management and Coordination: Manage daily trade compliance operations and coordinate cross-functional activities to keep export processes on track and compliant.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1-4 years of experience in: (a) trade compliance, customs brokerage, import/export operations, or logistics; and (b) BIS license submissions, particularly with deemed exports licenses and software classifications; and (c) Project & Program Management.
  • Associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, trade compliance certification, or equivalent practical experience. Relevant fields may include international trade, business, supply chain management information technology, or a related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of the EAR (Export Administration Regulations), deemed exports, Technology Control Plans, and FOCI structured organizations. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Jira).
  • Strong analytical, research, and communication skills, with high attention to detail and the ability to work collaboratively with legal, engineering, and business teams.
