Position Summary

Bristol Myers Squibb is seeking an experienced and accomplished laboratory animal veterinarian to join our Veterinary Sciences (VS) team as a Senior Staff Veterinarian based at our Lawrenceville, NJ (LVL) site. In this role, you will provide expert-level veterinary care for research animals, lead independent scientific research, and serve as a key contributor to our animal care and use program. This position will also require cross-coverage at our New Brunswick, NJ (NBR) site, including support for GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) studies. You will join a collaborative team of 8 veterinarians across 5 U.S. sites, working to uphold the highest standards of animal welfare, regulatory compliance, and scientific excellence. An interest in surgical models and anesthesia is a plus.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide and maintain high-quality clinical health care and accurate record keeping for all laboratory animals, including clinical diagnoses, treatment, management of disease outbreaks, and performance of surgery and anesthesia
  • Serve as clinical veterinarian at the LVL site, with cross-coverage responsibilities at the NBR site as needed, including support for GLP studies and ensuring veterinary oversight and compliance with applicable GLP regulations and standards
  • Assist with experimental protocol design and animal model development, as needed
  • Direct and evaluate animal health surveillance programs; interpret and apply microbiological, serological, and parasitological data to prevent, diagnose, and treat laboratory animal disease
  • Develop and lead independent research projects related to laboratory animal science and/or collaborate on research projects with other research groups
  • In cooperation with the VS Global Training Team, implement and deliver training programs for VS staff and research personnel to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and standards
  • Support the IACUC through rotational veterinary pre-review of all activities involving animals, conduct of post-approval monitoring (PAM), and assessment of research personnel technical competencies
  • May serve as Attending Veterinarian or alternate Attending Veterinarian on the IACUC as required
  • Lead and participate in cross-site committees and internal projects
  • Supervise VS staff as assigned

The candidate will provide veterinary care and oversight for a variety of species, including but not limited to: rodents, canines, rabbits, swine, and nonhuman primates (NHP).


Qualifications & Experience

  • DVM or equivalent degree, plus a current license to practice veterinary medicine in the United States
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working with laboratory animals, with demonstrated knowledge of their biology, diseases, and handling
  • ACLAM board-eligibility through completion of an ACLAM-approved post-doctoral program or accrual of equivalent experience (required); ACLAM board certification (preferred)
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and guidelines for the care and use of laboratory animals (FDA, USDA, IACUC, AAALAC)
  • Experience with or knowledge of GLP study support and compliance
  • Demonstrated experience gathering, interpreting, and applying data from environmental and laboratory animal health monitoring programs to make recommendations for process improvements
  • Demonstrated proficiency in managing projects and leading cross-site committees
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively as part of a team in a team science context
  • Interest in or experience with surgical models and anesthesia in a laboratory animal research setting (preferred)
  • Experience working with large animal species, including nonhuman primates and swine (preferred)

Compensation Overview:

Princeton - NJ - US: $196,450 - $238,054 


The starting compensation range(s) for this role are listed above for a full-time employee (FTE) basis. Additional incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility) may be available. The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills, where the job is performed, the employee’s work schedule, job-related knowledge, and experience. Final, individual compensation will be decided based on demonstrated experience.

Paid Time Off

  • US Exempt Employees: flexible time off (unlimited, with manager approval, 11 paid national holidays (not applicable to employees in Phoenix, AZ, Puerto Rico or Rayzebio employees)

  • Phoenix, AZ, Puerto Rico and Rayzebio Exempt, Non-Exempt, Hourly Employees: 160 hours annual paid vacation for new hires with manager approval, 11 national holidays, and 3 optional holidays

Based on eligibility*, additional time off for employees may include unlimited paid sick time, up to 2 paid volunteer days per year, summer hours flexibility, leaves of absence for medical, personal, parental, caregiver, bereavement, and military needs and an annual Global Shutdown between Christmas and New Years Day.

All global employees full and part-time who are actively employed at and paid directly by BMS at the end of the calendar year are eligible to take advantage of the Global Shutdown.

*Eligibility Disclosure: The summer hours program is for United States (U.S.) office-based employees due to the unique nature of their work. Summer hours are generally not available for field sales and manufacturing operations and may also be limited for the capability centers. Employees in remote-by-design or lab-based roles may be eligible for summer hours, depending on the nature of their work, and should discuss eligibility with their manager. Employees covered under a collective bargaining agreement should consult that document to determine if they are eligible. Contractors, leased workers and other service providers are not eligible to participate in the program.
