This role sits at the heart of a mission-driven financial organization focused on expanding access to capital for small businesses and underserved communities. The Assistant Controller plays a critical role in safeguarding the integrity of financial reporting while supporting both strategic and operational accounting functions across the organization. You will oversee key areas including month-end close, regulatory filings, and audit preparation, while also managing end-to-end loan operations for a small business lending program. This is a highly cross-functional position that connects accounting, lending, and compliance, requiring both technical depth and strong leadership. Working closely with the Controller, you will help design and strengthen internal controls and improve financial processes in a growing, impact-oriented environment. The role offers significant visibility and influence over financial accuracy, operational efficiency, and regulatory readiness.
Accountabilities
In this role, you will oversee core accounting operations while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and alignment with organizational and regulatory standards. You will be responsible for financial reporting, loan accounting, and internal control enhancement in a dynamic environment.
- Lead or review the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, ensuring accurate GAAP-compliant financial statements and management reporting
- Prepare and review regulatory filings, including credit union Call Reports, ensuring timely and accurate submissions
- Oversee end-to-end loan operations including origination, documentation, funding, servicing, and portfolio reconciliation
- Manage collections processes and ensure proper recording and monitoring of loan performance across systems
- Review reconciliations, journal entries, and financial transactions for accuracy, completeness, and proper classification
- Support audit preparation and serve as a key liaison for external auditors
- Design, implement, and monitor internal controls and continuously improve accounting policies and procedures
- Provide leadership support as a deputy to the Controller, including cross-functional collaboration and team oversight as needed
Requirements
This position requires a seasoned accounting professional with strong technical expertise, leadership experience, and the ability to operate in a regulated and mission-driven financial environment.
- Active CPA license required, with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory or review responsibilities
- Strong expertise in U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, and month-end close processes
- Experience with audit coordination and external auditor engagement
- Strong knowledge of financial controls, reconciliations, and regulatory compliance frameworks
- Experience in loan operations, including servicing, documentation, or portfolio accounting preferred
- Familiarity with credit union environments, NCUA regulations, or Call Report preparation is a strong plus
- Advanced Excel and financial systems skills (NetSuite experience is an advantage)
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across finance, operations, and leadership teams
- High attention to detail, strong analytical thinking, and ability to thrive in a mission-driven, fast-paced environment
