This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Assistant Designer, Communications based in Canada.
You will join a dynamic engineering environment focused on the design, testing, and optimization of advanced communications and industrial network systems supporting large-scale public transit operations. The role blends hands-on technical design with field coordination, offering exposure to both infrastructure projects and operational problem-solving. You will contribute to improving network reliability, safety, and performance across mission-critical systems. Working closely with senior engineers and maintenance teams, you will help translate design concepts into practical, standards-compliant solutions. The environment is collaborative, detail-oriented, and strongly focused on public service impact. Accountabilities:
- Provide technical support for the design, analysis, testing, and coordination of communications and network engineering projects, including system modifications and new implementations.
- Prepare and review drawings, specifications, estimates, material lists, test procedures, standards, and technical documentation aligned with internal design requirements.
- Conduct field and desk-based investigations to assess existing systems, troubleshoot operational issues, and identify opportunities for engineering improvements.
- Support the implementation, monitoring, and maintenance of industrial network infrastructure including routers, switches, firewalls, and related systems.
- Perform testing, commissioning, and performance evaluation of communications systems to ensure compliance with design standards and operational requirements.
- Research design standards, codes, and best practices to ensure all outputs meet regulatory and organizational expectations.
- Provide technical guidance to maintenance staff, contractors, and on-site personnel regarding equipment operation, installations, and inspections.
- Prepare reports, project updates, and technical documentation to support project tracking and decision-making.
Requirements:
- Post-secondary education in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in installing, configuring, and supporting Ethernet and enterprise network systems.
- Strong knowledge of networking protocols including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and routing concepts.
- Familiarity with network security principles such as firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS, and encryption technologies.
- Experience with network design principles, troubleshooting methodologies, and system performance analysis.
- Knowledge of relevant codes and standards (electrical safety, building codes, CSA standards, and related regulations).
- Proficiency with CADD tools (preferably MicroStation) and MS Office applications.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and technical communication skills.
- Ability to produce clear technical documentation and reports.
- Asset: Professional certification (PEO or OACETT), networking certifications, and experience with SONET/SDH systems.
- Ability to work flexible hours and support operational teams outside standard schedules when required.
