This role sits at the center of a large-scale federal healthcare modernization effort focused on transforming legacy systems into secure, scalable, and cloud-enabled enterprise platforms. You will be responsible for designing end-to-end infrastructure architectures that support mission-critical Veterans healthcare applications, ensuring resilience, performance, and compliance across highly regulated environments. The work spans hybrid cloud ecosystems, on-premise infrastructure, and modernization of legacy technologies, including VistA and related healthcare systems. A key part of the role involves evaluating and validating AI-generated infrastructure outputs to ensure accuracy and alignment with strict federal and VA standards before implementation. You will collaborate closely with cybersecurity, DevSecOps, application, and data teams to drive modernization at scale. This is a high-impact architecture role where your decisions directly influence the reliability and evolution of systems supporting Veterans’ healthcare services nationwide.

Accountabilities:

  • Lead the design and execution of enterprise infrastructure architecture supporting large-scale VA healthcare modernization initiatives.
  • Develop secure, scalable hybrid cloud and on-premise infrastructure solutions across compute, storage, networking, and identity domains.
  • Guide the modernization and migration of legacy healthcare systems, including VistA and MUMPS-based environments.
  • Review and validate AI-generated infrastructure designs, configurations, and deployment outputs to ensure compliance with federal and VA standards.
  • Define infrastructure roadmaps, reference architectures, and technical standards aligned with enterprise and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with DevSecOps, cybersecurity, database, and application teams to enable secure and efficient system integration.
  • Architect solutions ensuring high availability, disaster recovery, scalability, and operational resilience.
  • Provide technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle, including design reviews, governance, and implementation guidance.
  • Produce and maintain detailed technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, design specifications, and operational procedures.
  • Requirements:

    • 10+ years of experience in enterprise infrastructure engineering or architecture roles.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field.
    • Proven experience supporting large-scale federal IT modernization programs, ideally within healthcare or VA environments.
    • Strong expertise in hybrid cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
    • Deep understanding of enterprise infrastructure components, including virtualization, networking, storage, compute, and identity management.
    • Demonstrated ability to evaluate AI-generated technical outputs for correctness, completeness, and compliance in regulated environments.
    • Strong knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks including NIST, FISMA, FedRAMP, and Zero Trust principles.
    • Experience with infrastructure modernization strategies for legacy systems and mission-critical applications.
    • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage technical teams, executives, and government stakeholders.
    • Nice to have: experience with VistA, CPRS, MUMPS systems, Kubernetes/OpenShift, Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation), DevSecOps practices, and healthcare interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR).
    • Benefits:

      • Competitive compensation aligned with experience, skills, and location
      • Comprehensive benefits package supporting employees and their families
      • Opportunity to work on mission-critical federal healthcare modernization programs
      • Remote flexibility depending on program requirements
      • Exposure to advanced infrastructure modernization, AI-assisted engineering workflows, and large-scale enterprise systems
      • Professional growth in high-impact government technology environments
