At Amazon Web Service's Simple Storage Service (AWS S3) we are looking for an experienced engineering manager to build and lead a team of talented and motivated software engineers in a high-impact, highly scaled environment.
As a Software Development Manager you will contribute to the design and development of core and critical services within S3. You will use your experience to grow and develop the team of engineers and help to solve a challenging set of problems in a space packed full of opportunities.
AWS S3, is one of the largest distributed storage systems in the world. Managing trillions of objects in storage. With trillions of objects to manage and trillion of objects being accessed daily, our customers need information to understand how their objects are used, whether thats through usage reports, Cloud Watch metrics or Cloud Trail events. This role is responsible for solving the challenges that come with global scale event processing and how we get object usage and storage information to customers.
In AWS, if you build it, you own it. S3 is a highly available 7x24 worldwide service requiring dedicated support from our engineering teams. We pride ourselves on a high level of ownership in the work we do. This means we hold a high bar for test automation, verification processes, design and code reviews to ensure that our systems meet the exacting standards our customers demand. We maintain a regular on-call rotation across our teams with engineers and managers all taking part to resolve the inevitable issues that arise. We work hard to minimize getting paged in the middle of the night as we recognise that a well-rested employee is a productive employee.
Key job responsibilities
The key job responsibilities are; managing the day to day activities of a development team in the S3 Compute space, developing the long term team roadmap, ensuring that the team is operationally fit, developing and challenging the builders that report to you, working with stakeholders and customers to ensure that we are building the right thing.- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

- Experience working directly within engineering teams
- Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems
- Experience partnering with product and program management teams
- Experience building and cultivating relationships with internal and external stakeholders- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
