Software Engineering Manager

Job Description

MAINFRAME & HOGAN EXPERTISE (REQUIRED): 

  • Deep experience in IBM z/OS mainframe environments, including batch and online transaction processing 

  • Strong hands-on knowledge of COBOL development within Hogan core banking systems 

  • Proven experience with key Hogan components, including:  

  • Demand Deposit Accounting (DDA) 

  • Customer Information System (CIS) 

  • Customer Account Management System (CAMS) 

  • Additional Hogan modules (e.g., IPS, MISER, RPS, ODS, PAS) or equivalent components 

  • Understanding of Hogan architecture, data flows, file structures, and transaction processing patterns 

  • Experience supporting high-volume, mission-critical financial systems with strict availability and resiliency requirements 

  • Experience with Hogan online processing environments, including CICS-based transaction systems 

  • Experience supporting systems processing high-volume financial transactions with near real-time or continuous availability expectations 

  • Experience contributing to mainframe modernization initiatives, including reduction of batch processing windows and movement toward continuous or real-time processing models 

 

 

MODERN MAINFRAME DEVELOPMENT & DEVOPS (REQUIRED): 

  • Hands-on experience with modern development tools for mainframe, including:  

  • IBM Developer for z/OS (IDz) or Visual Studio Code with Z extensions 

  • Source control using GitLab or equivalent Git-based platforms 

  • Demonstrated experience implementing or supporting CI/CD pipelines for mainframe applications 

  • Familiarity with application security and code scanning tools (e.g., Black Duck) 

  • Knowledge of Endevor or similar mainframe SCM tools, with experience transitioning toward modern pipelines (e.g., GitLab CI/CD) 

  • Ability to bridge traditional mainframe practices with modern DevOps methodologies 

  • Experience with automated testing strategies for mainframe applications, including unit, integration, and regression testing 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Understands the different slices of the technology stack and has an advanced view on the applications. Responsible for applications systems analysis while seeking technical advantages and inspiring development activities. Leads by example, supports team and establish credibility with the quality of individual and team execution.  Coaches teams on following standards and aims for best practices, including a culture of quality and continual improvement. Empowers and coaches teams to consistently write production-ready code that is easily testable and understood by other developers, and accounts for edge cases and errors. 
  • Works to build and improve relationships, effectively communicates, and solicits feedback from engineers, managers and stakeholders. Is a touchpoint for technical inquiries from product managers, scrum masters, and customer support with the mindset and ability to effectively influence team members who build and ship high quality consumer facing products in a fast-paced, agile product development team while aligning with company and technology vision. 
  • Understands cross-team technical roadmaps, advocating new product abilities based on technical strategy & constraints, assists with cross-team strategic efforts and influences decisions to achieve efficient delivery of business value. Deep understanding of Agile, Product and delivery principles and promotes improvement to the delivery process; has a clear point of view and employs methods to refine and improve across teams.  
  • Helps resolve obstacles and de-motivators across teams to enable efficiency and completion of tasks. Actively demonstrates a positive attitude, advocates a culture of accountability, leads resolution and recognizes and rewards individual/team success and failures. Guides and collaborates with team and relevant stakeholders on policies, procedures and technical problems.  
  • Actively contributes to and leads talent management, including hiring, performance management and other people management tasks, with good understanding of applicable HR practices in interviewing, recruiting, performance reviews and regular check-in meetings. Fosters a culture of empowerment with direct reports and others in an open, respectful, flexible, empathetic manner while seeking out mentoring and coaching opportunities for themselves and others. Ensures all group members' roles are meeting career needs. 
  • Coaches and empowers the engineering organization on a troubleshooting mindset to diagnose and prevent issues from reoccurring. Leads incident response across the engineering organization as needed.  Researches and recommends tools and establishes processes to support the team in effective troubleshooting. 
  • Partners with architects to set the direction of the architectural roadmap. Contributes to establishing engineering strategic objectives that influences architecture and technical approaches. Actively works with the security lead/team to apply the organization’s security strategy. Fosters a security first mindset across those teams, leading by example.  
  • Contributes positively to company culture and actively promotes an inclusive culture. Experience in building and retaining diverse, high-performing teams with quality and continuous improvement. Experienced in managing geographically distributed teams. 
  • Understands financial and technological drivers on impacts to revenue, risk, brand and overall financial strategy.  
  • Guides teams in modernizing mainframe development practices, including adoption of DevOps tooling and automated pipelines 
  • Ensures applications meet mainframe performance, scalability, and resiliency requirements for high-volume banking systems 
  • Leads troubleshooting and incident response in z/OS production environments, including batch and online (CICS) systems 
  • Ensures adherence to strict production stability, release management, and change control processes required for core banking platforms 

 

 

 

SPECIFICATIONS: 

 

Excellent knowledge of information systems technology and software development processes and tools, especially industry specific applications. Comprehensive technical and business knowledge of the business unit supported. Thorough knowledge of organizational policies and procedures. Excellent analytical, product management, tactical planning and leadership skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Able to communicate with all parties involved in the product team (engineers, product owner, scrum master, third party vendors, customers, etc.). Demonstrated management, leadership and interpersonal skills.  

   

Strong knowledge of:  

  • COBOL, JCL, CICS, IMS, ASM 

  • Mainframe job scheduling and batch processing frameworks 

Experience working with:  

  • CICS transaction processing environments 

  • IMS for z/OS or equivalent mainframe databases 

Familiarity with:  

  • Mainframe performance monitoring and debugging tools
