Engineering Manager, DevX

Axon · Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Join Axon and be a Force for Good.

At Axon, we’re on a mission to Protect Life. We’re explorers, pursuing society’s most critical safety and justice issues with our ecosystem of devices and cloud software. Like our products, we work better together. We connect with candor and care, seeking out diverse perspectives from our customers, communities and each other.

Life at Axon is fast-paced, challenging and meaningful. Here, you’ll take ownership and drive real change. Constantly grow as you work hard for a mission that matters at a company where you matter.

Our Team

Axon Platform (APX) is the force multiplier. We provide high leverage services to internal and external customers, with scalable infrastructure and platform services, delightful builder experiences, and shared core customer experiences. We take thoughtful approach to ensure tangible benefits with measurable impact to our customers and empower owners to own.

Your Impact

As an Engineering Manager for the Developer Experience (DevX) group, you will be at the forefront of shaping the future of software engineering at Axon. You will directly manage the squad, taking localized ownership of the systems that serve as the backbone for engineering velocity. By driving the strategy for our internal developer ecosystem, you will ensure every engineer at Axon can ship code faster and safer, directly impacting product quality and public safety outcomes.

What You’ll Do

Location: This role is based out of our Ho Chi Minh City office and follows a hybrid schedule: onsite Tuesday through Friday and remote on Mondays, unless an approved accommodation applies. We place a high value on in-person collaboration and building a strong in-office culture.
Reports to: Engineering Director

  • Lead and develop a squad in DevX group – Direct day-to-day people and operational management for a high-performing but relatively young engineering squad. Mentor and coach individual contributors, foster career growth, instill strong code ownership, and cultivate a collaborative, inclusive team culture.
  • Drive the Safe Changes Platform: Actively contribute to the strategic design, roadmap, and core guidelines of Axon's Safe Changes Platform. Take end-to-end technical and operational ownership of key underlying components owned by the Spitfire squad, including AIS, MED, LCF, and associated developer tools.
  • Adopt a "Platform-as-a-Product" Mindset: Treat Axon's internal developers as your primary customers. Gather feedback and balance long-term platform vision with near-term deliverables to dramatically boost development productivity and software delivery safety.
  • Drive Cross-Pillar Adoption: Partner with engineering leaders, Product Managers (PMs), Technical Program Managers (TPMs), and Staff Engineers across the APX ecosystem and other organizational pillars. Navigate organizational complexities to advocate for and scale the adoption of the Safe Changes Platform.
  • Manage priorities and shield your teams – Act as the interface between your squads and the rest of Axon. Communicate and prioritize incoming requests to protect your teams from randomization, so they can remain focused on the most impactful work. Keep stakeholders informed about progress, risks, and needs, maintaining alignment and transparency.
  • Build and scale the team – Take responsibility for hiring and growing the DevX teams as needed. Recruit and retain top engineering talent, and make thoughtful decisions about team composition and structure.
  • Lead by example and uphold Axon’s culture – Serve as a cultural leader within the engineering org. Model Axon’s values of candor, care, and ownership in all your interactions. Foster an environment of innovation, inclusion, and continuous improvement where engineers are empowered to do the best work of their careers.
  • AI – driving AI adoption as a standard part of how the team plans, builds, and operates, and coaching engineers on effective usage.

What You Bring

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
  • Experience: 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including a proven track record of leading and delivering complex projects or products. You have experience managing engineers (ideally across multiple teams or areas) and driving initiatives from conception to production.
  • Technical Expertise: A strong technical background in software engineering. You have a deep understanding of software architecture and development practices and can engage in high-level technical discussions. While you won’t be coding daily, you’re capable of reviewing designs, understanding system architecture, and guiding technical decision-making.
  • Leadership & People Management: Demonstrated success in managing and scaling engineering teams. You have experience hiring talent, coaching engineers, and guiding teams through growth and change. Experience managing other engineering managers or tech leads is a strong plus. You’re comfortable taking responsibility for team performance, including making hard decisions to ensure team success.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You excel at cross-functional collaboration and can coordinate effectively with diverse teams (engineering, product, design, etc.) across different countries, time zones, and cultures.
  • Strategic Mindset: Ability to think ahead and anticipate future needs while delivering incremental improvements. You can define a long-term vision for developer experience and simultaneously break down goals into achievable steps that provide tangible, measurable impact along the way.
  • Passion for Developer Experience: A strong interest (and preferably experience) in developer productivity, DevOps, or platform engineering. Familiarity with modern CI/CD pipelines, developer tooling, front-end build systems, or automated testing frameworks is highly beneficial.
  • AI: Experience with or demonstrated commitment to AI-driven development practices, not just traditional DevOps tooling
