Engineering Manager
At SumUp, we believe small merchants are the heartbeat of our communities. By joining the Global Bank tribe, you'll be part of a global team across Berlin, Cologne, São Paulo, Santiago, Sofia, and Vilnius — all working together to build the #1 bank for small businesses worldwide.
As a key member of our Engineering tribe, you’ll help build a digital bank from the ground up within one of the world's fastest-growing fintechs. You'll work in autonomous, cross-functional squads tackling complex, high-impact challenges across banking and payments infrastructure, with the freedom to take ownership, experiment, and make real architectural decisions. Here, the problems are hard, the scale is real, and the work you ship directly shapes the financial lives of millions of small business owners around the world.
As an Engineering Manager, you will navigate the complexities of scaling high-availability systems that handle millions of transactions while steering your teams through a high-impact transition from local solutions to a unified global architecture. If you are driven by the challenge of turning technical debt into operational excellence and building the "number one bank" for small businesses, this is your next chapter.
What You’ll Do

- Establish Ownership: Actively establish clear ownership and accountability across your squads, ensuring every engineer understands their impact on the platform's availability and peak performance goals.
- Strategic Partnership: Work in close collaboration with the Product Manager to define OKRs and navigate complex cross-tribe dependencies, ensuring the roadmap and deliveries are perfectly aligned with business goals.
- Technical Excellence: Actively participate in technical decisions, conduct code reviews, and define standards for operational excellence to ensure a top-tier merchant experience.
- Global Convergence: Spearhead the migration and convergence of our local Brazilian platforms into a global architecture, ensuring our technology scales with our international ambitions and impacts millions of users worldwide.
- Quality & Culture: Guarantee product quality with a steadfast focus on engineering best practices (Clean Code, Testing, CI/CD) and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
What Makes You a Great Fit

- Strong experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (DynamoDB, Redis)
- Experience with queues (SNS/SQS, RabbitMQ) and preferably streaming (Kafka)
- AWS or comparable cloud experience
- Experience with modern cloud-native backend technologies (microservices, containers, orchestration)
- Advanced English proficiency (written and spoken)
