Onebrief is collaboration and AI-powered workflow software designed specifically for military staffs. By transforming this work, Onebrief makes the staff as a whole superhuman - meaning faster, smarter, and more efficient.
We take ownership, seek excellence, and play to win with the seriousness and camaraderie of an Olympic team. Onebrief operates as an all-remote company, though many of our employees work alongside our customers at military commands around the world.
Founded in 2019 by a group of experienced planners, today, Onebrief’s team spans veterans from all forces and global organizations, and technologists from leading-edge software companies. We’ve raised $320m+ from top-tier investors, including Battery Ventures, General Catalyst, Sapphire Ventures, Insight Partners, and Human Capital, and today, Onebrief is valued at $2.15B. With this continued growth, Onebrief is able to make an impact where it matters most.
We're hiring a Senior Software Engineer to help design, build, and operate the systems that power our platform. We operate in a squad-based model: small, focused teams that form around problems. Engineers move fluidly across squads as priorities shift, so breadth of thinking and the ability to ramp quickly in new domains matter as much as deep specialization.
Our platform spans a modern full stack: a React/TypeScript frontend, Node.js backend services, cloud-native infrastructure, and authentication and identity systems. You'll work across these layers, tackling challenges in performance, reliability, scalability, security, and user experience. We value strong engineering judgment over mastery of any single technology.
You're a generalist at heart. Someone who gets restless when siloed and thrives when moving across the stack and across problem domains. You think in systems, communicate trade-offs clearly, and use AI tooling as a natural part of how you work, not as a novelty. You bring your own judgment to ambiguous situations and don't need a fully defined problem to make progress. You care about the craft of engineering and the mission it serves.
Design, build, and maintain systems across the stack, from frontend interfaces and APIs to backend services, databases, and infrastructure.
Rotate across squads as priorities shift, bringing your expertise to wherever it creates the most leverage, and ramping quickly in unfamiliar domains.
Evolve and optimize core systems including data models, authentication flows, API layers, and client-side architecture.
Diagnose and resolve performance, scalability, reliability, and security issues in production.
Collaborate on architecture and long-term strategy across platform, infrastructure, and product dimensions.
Implement and refine monitoring, alerting, observability, and auditing across systems.
Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate implementation, testing, and code quality — and help establish team norms for doing so effectively.
Balance long-term engineering quality with pragmatic, high-velocity delivery.
6+ years of experience in software engineering
Equivalent practical experience valued equally to a formal degree
Fluency across the stack. Comfortable working in frontend, backend, and infrastructure as the problem demands
Strong understanding of distributed systems, API design (REST, GraphQL, gRPC), and data modeling
Hands-on experience with containerization and cloud infrastructure (Docker, Kubernetes, AWS/GCP/Azure)
Comfort operating in a fluid squad model, able to context-switch, ramp fast on new domains, and contribute without needing long warm-up time
Active use of AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) to accelerate development. We expect engineers to treat AI as a force multiplier, not an afterthought
Strong communication skills and the ability to clearly articulate technical trade-offs
Track record of ownership and delivering complex projects in a fast-paced environment
Nice to Have Qualifications
Experience with observability stacks (logging, metrics, tracing) and incident response
Background in mission-critical or high-compliance domains (SOC2, FedRAMP, HIPAA, or DoD)
Experience with event-driven architectures (Kafka, Pub/Sub, microservices)
Prior experience driving architecture and system design decisions for complex, high-scale systems
Some familiarity with authentication protocols (OIDC, OAuth 2.0, SAML) or access control patterns
Frontend: React, TypeScript, Vite, shared component libraries, client-side observability
Backend: Node.js, PostgreSQL, Redis, secure RESTful APIs, distributed services
Authentication & Authorization: Keycloak, OpenID Connect (OIDC), SAML 2.0, OAuth 2.0, ABAC, JWT, federated identity provider integrations
Infrastructure: Kubernetes, AWS, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, container security and secrets management
Integrations: CSV/Excel/KML importers, PDF exports, DoD and enterprise data systems, secure API gateways, auditing pipelines
