Summary of Job Duties:

The MLS II position is an important role within the Blood Bank department that assists with validations, quality control performance, staff safety training, inventory management, and LIS support. This position collaborates closely with the Blood Bank Supervisor in order to maintain day-to-day operations. This position will also focus on improving patient outcomes by performing advanced blood banking techniques, dispensing blood and blood components, and educating students.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Chemistry, or Biology
  • 2 years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting
  • ASCP Certification or equivalent  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of LIS configuration and support, Laboratory Safety Officer, Validations, Staff Training and Education, Performance of Quality Control
  • Previous blood bank or transfusion medicine experience

Job Requirements:

  • Perform complex blood bank testing, including:
    • ABO/Rh blood typing
    • Antibody screening and identification
    • Crossmatching procedures
    • Direct and indirect antiglobulin testing
  • Prepare, process, and issue blood and blood components for transfusion.
  • Monitor and maintain blood inventory levels and ensure proper storage conditions.
  • Investigate and resolve transfusion reactions and serological discrepancies.
  • Perform quality control and quality assurance procedures in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Review, verify, and accurately report laboratory test results.
  • Ensure compliance with standards established by organizations such as AABB, CAP, and The Joint Commission.
  • Assist with training and mentoring laboratory staff, students, and new employees.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and laboratory records.
  • Participate in proficiency testing, competency assessments, and laboratory improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals regarding transfusion support and patient care needs.
  • Respond to emergency blood product requests and support massive transfusion protocols when needed.
  • Perform other duties as needed
