If you join our team, you’ll be contributing to building the technology that powers the future.

About the Role

Nscale is hiring a Director, Legal - ESG to build the legal backbone of its ESG framework and own the legal and regulatory architecture that supports credible, audit-ready sustainability claims.

This role sits within Legal & Compliance and operates at the centre of a co-owned ESG framework, ensuring that what Nscale says publicly about its environmental, social and governance performance is defensible against underlying data and applicable regulatory standards. You’ll work closely with Corporate Affairs for joint disclosure sign-off and external mandate, the ESG Programme Office for dotted-line coordination, the CFO and Finance reporting teams, Global HSEQ, and operational data owners across Data Centres/Operations, People, and Procurement/Supply Chain.

You’ll have a significant impact on how Nscale scales responsibly, creating the policy suite, regulatory mapping, disclosure controls, legal review process, data governance expectations and substantiation standards needed to support trusted ESG communications across external stakeholder groups.

What you'll be doing

Build ESG legal and disclosure architecture

  • Own Legal’s ESG regulatory and disclosure-control architecture across applicable frameworks, including SEC climate disclosure rules, EU CSRD, UK SDR, SECR, GRI, SASB and other relevant standards.
  • Translate regulatory requirements into practical controls, reporting requirements and governance processes.
  • Establish the policy suite, regulatory map, disclosure review process and evidence standards needed for a scalable ESG legal framework.
  • Build a defensible framework that can operate effectively as Nscale grows.

Strengthen ESG data governance and assurance readiness

  • Establish ESG data governance expectations, including source data ownership, methodology documentation, evidence retention, audit trails and sign-off requirements.
  • Ensure external claims are traceable to reliable underlying data.
  • Lead Legal input into materiality, ESG risk and assurance readiness.
  • Integrate ESG priorities, targets and disclosures into enterprise risk, internal audit and future external assurance processes.

Review ESG claims and mitigate disclosure risk

  • Provide substantive legal review of external ESG claims and disclosures, including sustainability reports, investor materials, customer and data-room materials, website content, press releases, public affairs messaging and other external communications.
  • Mitigate greenwashing, inconsistent-claim and regulatory risk across ESG communications.
  • Advise on substantiation standards and the boundaries of permissible external statements.
  • Support a functioning ESG claims and disclosure sign-off process with Corporate Affairs and ESG stakeholders.

Partner across the business on ESG governance

  • Partner with Corporate Affairs, ESG Programme Office, Finance, HSEQ, Operations and Procurement to create a consistent ESG disclosure narrative and operating model.
  • Advise on ESG legal risks material to Nscale’s business, including energy and grid impact, water use, carbon and renewable-energy claims, siting and permitting, community engagement, supply-chain due diligence, critical minerals, e-waste and responsible AI.
  • Support ESG governance and Board reporting, including Audit & Risk Committee and Nomination & Governance Committee materials, decision records, escalation processes and evidence packs.
  • Develop practical guidance and training for business teams on ESG claims, approval workflows, escalation triggers and evidence standards.

KPIs

  • ESG legal framework built from the ground up
  • ESG regulatory obligations and disclosure risks mapped into practical business controls
  • Functioning ESG claims and disclosure sign-off process operating with no unsupported external claims
  • ESG legal risks integrated into enterprise risk, internal audit planning and relevant Board or committee reporting

About You

  • Qualified lawyer in England & Wales or an equivalent jurisdiction, with significant post-qualification experience across ESG, sustainability, governance and regulatory disclosure work.
  • Proven experience building governance frameworks from the ground up, including policies, controls, review processes, escalation routes and evidence standards capable of withstanding audit or external assurance.
  • Deep working knowledge of ESG and sustainability regulation and reporting frameworks, with the ability to translate requirements into practical controls and business processes.
  • Strong understanding of ESG disclosure risk, green claims, anti-greenwashing standards, substantiation requirements and the governance needed to support public-facing statements.
  • Strong commercial judgement, with the confidence to operate as a credible partner to Corporate Affairs, Finance, HSEQ, Operations, Procurement, Risk and senior leadership while maintaining a clear Legal sign-off line.
  • Sector exposure to data centres, infrastructure, energy, technology or AI infrastructure, including familiarity with associated environmental, supply-chain and community issues.
  • Experience with ESG investor engagement, rating agencies or customer sustainability diligence, including MSCI, Sustainalytics, EcoVadis or equivalent frameworks.
  • Experience working in a fast-scaling company or regulated or externally scrutinised environment.
  • Sound, defensible judgement under scrutiny and the ability to make regulatory complexity actionable for the Board, leadership and commercial teams.
  • Low-ego, high-accountability operator who can build structure from ambiguity and move work forward in a shared-ownership model.
