This senior legal role is focused on protecting and advancing innovation by managing intellectual property strategy across a global scientific and technology-driven organization.
You will be responsible for safeguarding inventions through patent prosecution, portfolio management, and freedom-to-operate assessments that support cutting-edge research and product development.
The position plays a key role in enabling business growth by ensuring IP strategies are aligned with commercial and scientific priorities.
You will act as a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders, translating complex legal and technical issues into clear, actionable guidance for leadership teams.
The role combines strategic counseling, hands-on IP portfolio management, and negotiation of key agreements that support collaboration and innovation.
You will also contribute to building internal IP awareness through training and education across the organization.

Accountabilities:
- Provide strategic legal counsel on intellectual property matters, including patentability, invention mining, prosecution strategy, and freedom-to-operate assessments across global markets.
- Lead and manage outside counsel in the preparation, filing, and prosecution of patent and trademark applications, ensuring quality, cost efficiency, and alignment with business priorities.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of IP-related agreements, including licensing, collaboration, confidentiality, research, and material transfer agreements.
- Conduct and oversee freedom-to-operate analyses for emerging technologies, identifying and mitigating IP risks to support innovation pipelines.
- Advise internal stakeholders and executive leadership on IP strategy, risk management, and protection of proprietary technologies.
- Develop and deliver training sessions and educational programs to enhance IP awareness across the organization.
- Manage and maintain portions of a global IP portfolio, ensuring alignment with corporate strategy and innovation objectives.
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school with strong academic credentials.
- Active bar membership and eligibility to practice law in the United States.
- Admission to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), including at least limited recognition.
- 7+ years of experience in intellectual property law, including both law firm and in-house counsel experience.
- Strong technical background in biology, chemistry, physics, or software with working knowledge of life sciences or engineering domains.
- Demonstrated experience managing global IP portfolios and advising senior business and technical stakeholders.
- Strong negotiation, drafting, and analytical skills across complex IP agreements and transactions.
- Excellent executive communication skills with the ability to influence senior leaders, including C-level stakeholders.
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced, high-performance environment with strong problem-solving and prioritization skills.
- Willingness to travel approximately 10% domestically and internationally.
- Annual salary range of $215,667 – $237,500 with eligibility for bonus and incentive compensation.
