SENIOR LEGAL COUNSEL

INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS & DIRECT-TO-CONSUMER, NBCUNIVERSAL

ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS & DIRECT-TO-CONSUMER (DTC) GROUP 

As one of the world’s premier entertainment portfolios, NBCUniversal International Networks & Direct-to-Consumer delivers quality content and compelling brands to over 160 territories across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Asia Pacific. Delivering a full range of entertainment experiences to local audiences across the globe, the unique brands include Universal TV, Sci-Fi, 13th Street, DIVA, Studio Universal, Telemundo, Bravo and DreamWorks. Universal+ (a hybrid linear and non-linear service) aggregates the group’s brands on affiliate platforms, offering subscribers both live programming and an extensive range of compelling VOD content, including territory premieres and boxsets, available all in one place.

NBCU’s direct-to-consumer activity outside the US includes Hayu, the all-reality SVOD service available in 45 territories – including the UK, Canada and across Europe and Asia Pacific.

Overview

A permanent full-time position in a friendly, collaborative team covering a varied workload.

As well as being part of the dynamic International Networks & DTC business in EMEA (covering Europe, the Middle East and Africa), you will be part of an international legal community with access to a wide range of in-house training and development opportunities, events and knowledge-sharing resources.

Responsibilities

This role will support a broad range of our internal client teams, including Commercial, Programming, Ad Sales, Marketing and International Media Distribution (IMD), and will involve:

  • Negotiation and drafting of agreements for the distribution of NBCU‘s portfolio of entertainment and news channels, direct-to-consumer offerings and brands across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
  • Negotiation and drafting of content acquisition, advertising and sponsorship agreements, and advising on marketing and consumer law issues, as required.
  • Acting as primary legal adviser (with support from other members of the team) for the IMD business representing third-party foreign language channels for distribution into the US.
  • Assisting on project work and product launches.
  • Keeping up to date with, and advising the business on, key legislative and regulatory developments in the EMEA and Asia Pacific regions, including on copyright, advertising and compliance matters.
  • Working closely with NBCU’s specialist IP, Litigation, Privacy and Employment lawyers where needed.

The responsibilities may be modified at any time and may include supervision and training of junior staff.

ABOUT YOU

The position requires a professional and motivated person who:

  • has business acumen, experience managing internal stakeholders and the ability to balance legal risk with commercial objectives;
  • has excellent drafting and communication skills, great accuracy and attention to detail;
  • proactively manages a broad range of open matters and is able to prioritise in order to meet deadlines;
  • has flexibility in their approach and good problem-solving and interpersonal skills;
  • has a willingness to share knowledge to support learning and development in the wider team;
  • able to demonstrate an understanding of, or interest in, using AI to improve efficiency within individual and team workstreams.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Eligible to work in the UK.
  • Qualified to practise law in the UK preferred (other jurisdictions considered) with 6-10 years’ post-qualification experience or equivalent (this is a guide and candidates with more experience are welcome to apply).
  • Experiencing leading on the drafting and negotiation of commercial contracts is essential. IP or transactional corporate experience, either in private practice or in-house, is highly advantageous.
  • Able to demonstrate an interest in the media industry and legal issues related to it.
