Operations Engineer

Grubhub · New York, NY

About Grubhub

At Grubhub, we believe food is more than just a meal: It’s a source of discovery, connection, and pure enjoyment. There’s a time and place for every type of dish, from hidden neighborhood gems to tried-and-true favorites, and we exist to connect people with the food they love in all the ways they like to dig in. We’ve been at it since 2004, but now, as part of Wonder, Grubhub is operating with a renewed sense of momentum and the high-velocity energy of a powerhouse startup.

As a leading U.S. ordering and delivery marketplace, we feature over 415,000 merchants in more than 4,000 cities, creating the ultimate food experience by elevating online ordering through innovative restaurant technology, easy-to-use platforms, and an improved delivery experience. We are constantly finding new ways to innovate—from integrated grocery delivery with groceries powered by Instacart to exclusive loyalty programs. Join our team, based out of New York City, Chicago and Denver, and help us give our diners the exceptional value they deserve.

About the Role

Grubhub's campus card program brings our ordering platform to hundreds of university dining programs across the country. The Operations Engineer, Campus is the technical backbone of that program, responsible for configuring, deploying, and maintaining the integrations that connect Grubhub to campus card systems like Transact, CBORD, Atrium, Heartland OneCard, and Cardsmith.

You'll be joining a small, focused team within Grubhub's OPS Engineering organization that owns campus card deployments for our higher education dining clients. The team is in an active period of process standardization, building the systems and documentation that create a more consistent, scalable deployment experience. You'll have real ownership here, and the work you do to document and systematize will have a lasting impact on how the team operates.

You'll own the end-to-end technical execution of campus deployments: from validating intake requirements and configuring payment gateways, to setting up SSO integrations and card parsing rules, to troubleshooting issues as they surface in production and later escalations. You'll work directly with campus IT teams, card system vendors, and internal CSM and product partners, and you'll help build the documentation and processes that make the whole operation more repeatable and scalable.

The Impact You Will Make

  • Execute technical configurations for new campus deployments and card provider transitions, including payment gateway setup, card parsing pattern development, and Shibboleth SSO integration

  • Review and validate technical intake submissions from campuses and CSMs before configuration begins, identifying missing dependencies early so deployment timelines don't slip

  • Edit and maintain Python and XML configuration files for campus card parsing (track data patterns, PAN manipulation, mobile auth types) within the payment-server codebase

  • Set up and validate Shibboleth SP configurations for new campuses, including attribute mapping and IdP metadata registration

  • Troubleshoot integration failures using API response codes, gateway logs, and SQL queries against internal reporting systems

  • Maintain and improve runbooks, escalation paths, and technical documentation so institutional knowledge lives in the system, not with any one person

  • Participate in deployment syncs with campus IT, card system vendors (Transact, CBORD, Atrium, and others), and internal CSM and product stakeholders

  • Surface process gaps and propose improvements to your manager; you're expected to spot what's broken and have a point of view on how to fix it

What You Bring to the Table

  • Hands-on experience working with APIs: you know how to read an error response, trace a failed request, and understand what's happening at the integration layer

  • Comfort reading and making targeted edits to Python and XML files; you don't need to be a full-stack engineer, but you need to be unintimidated by code

  • Working knowledge of SQL for reporting, ad hoc troubleshooting, and validating data integrity

  • Familiarity with SAML 2.0 / SSO concepts (IdP/SP relationships, metadata, attribute mapping) or a demonstrated ability to get up to speed on technical protocols quickly

  • Strong operational instincts: you notice when a process is creating risk, you document what you learn, and you follow through on the details

  • Clear written and verbal communication; you'll be interfacing with campus IT departments and third-party vendors and need to hold your own in a technical conversation

  • Experience working in or alongside customer-facing teams where you're balancing internal process with external deadlines

Got These? Even Better

  • Prior experience with campus card systems (Transact/Blackboard, CBORD, Atrium, Heartland OneCard, Cardsmith, or similar)

  • Familiarity with Jira for project and ticket management

  • Experience writing or maintaining technical runbooks or integration documentation.

Our hybrid model requires 3 days a week in the office. That said, many team members choose to come in more often to take advantage of in-person collaboration and connection. You're welcome—and encouraged—to be in the office up to 5 days a week if it works for you.

New York: $96,000 per year.
