Summary

Responsible for contributing to and overseeing daily production activities to meet production goals, quality standards, and cost objectives. Primarily floor-based (greater than 50% of time) and includes direct labor responsibilities in addition to coordinating and leading a team in assigned production areas.

Prioritizes production schedules based on product introduction, equipment efficiency, and materials supply. Supports planning and administration of procedures and budgets. Provides input to budgetary recommendations and monitors expenditures related to direct/indirect labor and materials. Develops schedules based on manpower requirements for assigned areas. Actively participates in production operations while assisting in selecting, developing, and evaluating personnel to ensure efficient operation of the function.

OTHER SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS OR DUTIES

Performs required leadership responsibilities including but not limited to: implementing company policies, programs, and guidelines; supporting employee productivity and development; coordinating resources; maintaining working knowledge of Varex’s business; and sustaining functional, technical, and external market awareness necessary for the assigned area. Works alongside team members on the production floor to ensure adherence to standards, resolve issues in real time, and meet operational targets. Assists manager in development of longer-range plans as required. Scope may include interaction with other sites and operations. Performs ongoing review of safety practices to minimize risk and ensure compliance.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND CERTIFICATIONS

Minimum Required Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability, competence, and confidence to lead and support people in a hands-on environment

  • Effective interpersonal skills.

  • Understanding of operations finance, particular to direct and indirect labor and associated expenses

  • Knowledge with Lean Mfg, DFT, JIT or similar principles

  • Demonstrated ability to balance production work with coordination responsibilities

Experience Level with Business Tools

  • Familiarity and working abilities with:  Project Planning, charting and presentations

  • Proficient in utilizing business tools such as:  E-mail, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 

  • Experience with SAP or equivalent ERP product and productivity software desired.

  • Works on issues where analysis of situation or data requires review of relevant factors.     Monitors daily operations of a unit.  Exercises independent judgment and discretion to resolve complex business problems.   Requires full knowledge of functional responsibility.

  • Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve results may cause delays in schedules.

  • Interacts daily with subordinates and/or functional peer groups. 

Supervision

  • Provides day-to-day direction to a group of employees, including assigning tasks, monitoring work, and maintaining schedules. Spends a significant portion of time performing hands-on production work alongside the team. Generally supports and leads semi-skilled employees.

Typical Education and Experience

  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent

  • 3 years of related experience

  • Typically no prior management experience

ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Environment and Physical Demands

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without accommodation.

  • Medium work that will frequently require the employee to lift/move up to 50 lbs. and occasionally lift more than 75 lbs. to greater than 100 lbs.
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or moving heavy equipment and/or supplies frequently.
  • Reaching above and below the shoulder frequently.
  • Above-average agility and dexterity with the ability to hold, grasp and manipulate small parts and use hand and power tools constantly.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and handle physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, stretching, reaching, repetitive motion, or similar activities.
  • Work environments includes exposure to chemicals, electrical current, proximity to moving mechanical parts, repetitive hand motion, open flame, working from heights, cold environment, hot environment, uneven surface, fumes.
