Position Summary

The Accountant I, General Ledger is responsible for supporting routine General Ledger activities for the Japan Finance team, including journal entry preparation and posting, account review, basic reconciliation support, data extraction, documentation, and support for monthly, quarterly, and annual closing activities.

As a Band 4 role, this position is expected to execute assigned accounting tasks accurately and on time under the direction of the manager or senior team members. The role requires basic accounting knowledge, understanding of journal entries and account characteristics, and the ability to follow company Accounting Policy, AAM, and generally accepted accounting principles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual GL closing activities.
  • Prepare and post routine journal entries under manager guidance.
  • Review assigned account balances and support basic reconciliation activities.
  • Extract and organize data required for tax filings, statutory reporting, audits, internal reporting, and other compliance requirements.
  • Maintain appropriate supporting documentation and evidence for accounting activities.
  • Explain the business flow of the assigned work area to stakeholders when required.
  • Follow up on routine issues within the assigned scope and escalate unresolved matters to the direct manager with possible options.
  • Support review and improvement of accounting and business processes within the assigned area.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of practical experience in a finance or accounting department, audit firm, accounting firm, or equivalent experience.
  • Basic understanding of bookkeeping, journal entries, account characteristics, and general ledger processes.
  • Experience preparing or supporting routine journal entries and closing activities.
  • Ability to extract, organize, and review accounting data using Excel.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to complete assigned tasks accurately and within deadlines.
  • Good communication skills in Japanese.
  • Basic English reading and writing skills for emails, documentation, and system-related communication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a multinational company or shared service environment.
  • Experience using ERP or accounting systems.
  • Basic understanding of US GAAP, Japan GAAP, company accounting policies, or AAM.
  • Experience supporting tax, statutory, audit, or internal control activities.
  • Nissho Bookkeeping Grade 2 or above, or equivalent accounting knowledge.

Band 4 Level Expectation

This role is focused on accurate execution of assigned GL tasks within a defined scope. The position is expected to understand basic accounting processes, perform routine journal entry and data preparation work under guidance, communicate with stakeholders regarding the assigned area, and escalate complex or unresolved issues to the manager with relevant facts and possible options. This role is not expected to independently make complex accounting judgments or lead broad end-to-end process improvement initiatives.
