Vice President, P4, Lead Software Engineer

Morgan Stanley · Tokyo, Japan

We are seeking a senior hands-on engineer to join our Finance Technology team in Tokyo and help modernize finance workflows in Asia. This role focuses on building AI-enabled solutions that reduce manual effort for financial controllers while improving the quality, speed, and resilience of business-critical processes.

You will own solutions from design through production, including both business-facing capabilities and improvements to engineering productivity. This includes applying LLMs and automation to improve testing confidence, deployment quality, and developer feedback loops.

Experience in finance technology or accounting-related systems is valuable, but we are equally interested in strong engineers who can learn the domain quickly and thrive in a complex, regulated environment. Success in this role requires developing a strong understanding of financial products, accounting flows, and reporting processes over time.

About Finance Technology

Finance Technology supports the systems and workflows that underpin the firm’s books, records, reporting, and control environment. The Finance organization is responsible for financial control, profitability analysis, capital management, internal and external reporting, and contributing to firmwide risk management.

Finance Technology builds and operates the platforms that enable these processes, while continuously improving efficiency, control, and scalability. A distinctive aspect of this team is its breadth of interaction across the firm: our systems process data across all major asset classes and integrate inputs from Risk, Settlements, market data, and other core functions. The team works closely with a wide range of business and technology partners across the firm.

We are currently focused on automating manual workflows, modernizing core platforms, and applying AI where it can deliver measurable improvements in efficiency, quality, and control. In Asia, this means solving for regional complexity such as multiple markets, regulators, local products, and currencies.

Our systems span user-facing UI’s, scalable REST services, large-scale analytical processing, and warehouse reporting over 100TB+ of data. The environment includes high-volume orchestration and operationally complex data workflows. We work across Scala, Java, and Python, and value engineers who can navigate a heterogeneous stack. Strong SQL and Linux fluency are important in day-to-day development and production support.

Position Description:

We are looking for an engineer who can take ownership of complex problems, work effectively across global teams, and drive delivery with a high degree of autonomy.

You will work closely with engineers and business stakeholders to understand data workflows, design and implement new capabilities, test them rigorously, and deploy them into production. The ideal candidate combines strong engineering judgment with curiosity about the finance domain and a willingness to explore new technologies pragmatically. While depth in backend and data-intensive systems is most important, we value engineers who are comfortable contributing across the stack when needed.

The role is based in Tokyo, where the team works closely with regional stakeholders and users. We work in close proximity to our users and stakeholders, enabling fast feedback, stronger partnership, and clearer understanding of operational needs. You will also collaborate closely with development teams and stakeholders across Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Mumbai, London, Montreal, and New York.

In this role, you should expect to:

- Design and build robust solutions to real business problems, remaining hands-on throughout delivery. Technology choices vary by component and team strategy, so adaptability across the stack is important.

- Challenge existing architectural patterns and propose thoughtful enhancements.

- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the team’s technical growth.

- Improve throughput and reliability by optimizing processing pipelines and deployment workflows.

- Build and evolve ETL and data-processing jobs with a focus on orchestration, performance, and operational stability.

- Partner with product management and stakeholders to define new features and translate them into clear technical designs.

- Develop a strong understanding of accounting concepts and Finance reporting platforms to design effective solutions.

- Contribute to engineering innovation through hack days and by advancing our DevOps, cloud, and AI capabilities.

Required Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with strong hands-on capability in backend development such as Java, Scala, or Python

  • Strong SQL skills and experience with relational databases such as Snowflake, Teradata, Sybase, or DB2

  • Strong Linux proficiency, including the ability to navigate environments, support deployments, and troubleshoot production issues

  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to reason through complex architectural and data problems

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, product, and business stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with finance technology, accounting-related systems, or regulated enterprise environments

  • Experience contributing to full-stack applications, including Angular or other web UI frameworks

  • Exposure to AI or LLM-enabled solutions in software delivery, workflow automation, or developer productivity

  • Experience with ETL orchestration, large-scale data processing, or operationally complex production systems
