In the context of a strategic innovation and acceleration within China R&D, the Portfolio Management Lead serves as a proactive driver and central connector to enable the design, strategic alignment, and cross-functional execution of key initiatives spanning China external innovation programs, JAPAC collaborative projects, and early development programs in support of global pipeline acceleration.
Reporting to Head of Development Strategy and Operations, this role acts as a strategic partner to the China Clinical Development TA Heads and the China Asset Strategy Leadership group.
The purpose is to support the integrated portfolio strategic initiative planning, portfolio intelligence, and initiative-level integration that empower clinical development teams to deliver on China's evolving mandate - enhancing local strategic impact while strengthening global alignment. Together with internal and external partners, this role fosters a collaborative environment where China's unique contributions accelerate shared R&D success.
This role focuses on the portfolio initiative design, cross-initiative integration, strategic alignment, and governance coordination
- Translate the China innovation strategy into well-defined, actionable portfolio initiatives - including early asset acceleration assessments and JAPAC partnership models. Validate strategic assumptions through cross - functional data reviews; ensure initiative design reflects clinical development parameters.
- Lead the end-to-end development and strategic roadmap of key R&D initiatives (e.g., China external innovation programs, JAPAC collaboration models, early pipeline acceleration requests). Accountable for initiative-level structure, interdependencies, milestones, and decision checkpoints with China-specific or regional development plans.
- Lead portfolio-level analysis and scenario planning to support strategic trade-offs, resource alignment, and risk assessment across initiatives. Deliver actionable portfolio insights to China R&D functional leaders; co-define initiative - level KPIs and health metrics.
- Drive cross-functional collaboration and problem - solving among R&D functions, and global asset strategy teams to enable seamless initiative execution. Facilitate joint forums and communication channels; proactively identify and help resolve integration gaps.
- Establish transparent governance and collaborative reporting mechanisms that connect initiative progress to program - level execution, ensuring visibility for local and global stakeholders. Own the initiative review cadence, escalation pathways, and decision documentation; align with global standards while adapting to China's strategic upgrade needs.
- As needed, this role will also support China program & project management work for innovative drugs & devices, ensuring a well-balanced value driven pipeline, conduct capturing of accurate project data and maintain the data pool, lead data analytic driven program & project prioritization and support active risk management of projects.
Required
- Bachelor with 12 years+, Master with 10 years+, Ph. D with 8 years+ R&D Portfolio/Program management, project leadership, or clinical development strategy experience with multinational pharmaceutical companies.
- Strong understanding of clinical development processes, including late-stage programs and early pipeline acceleration. Proven experience in the China R&D environment, including familiarity with NMPA regulations and local trial landscape.
- Strong portfolio analysis skills (e.g., scenario modeling, resource forecasting, risk-benefit assessment).
- A collaborative, enabler-oriented approach, comfortable operating in dynamic and evolving strategic environments. Demonstrated ability to build trust and influence cross-functional partners in a matrix organization (local and global).
- Strong communication skills and fluent in English and mandarin (written and spoken).
Preferred
- Prior involvement in JAPAC regional collaborations or global early development acceleration (e.g., proof-of-concept, first-in-human studies).
- Proficiency in portfolio management tools (e.g., Planisware, Microsoft Project, or similar). PMP or similar certification.
Experience contributing to transformation or strategic upgrade initiatives within an R&D function.
