This role sits at the intersection of legal strategy and social impact, supporting organizations working to expand and protect access to reproductive healthcare across the United States. The position offers the opportunity to act as embedded “in-house” counsel for a range of mission-driven clients, including healthcare providers and grassroots organizations. You will advise on complex and evolving legal issues in a rapidly changing regulatory landscape, particularly following significant shifts in U.S. reproductive rights law. The work combines legal advisory, strategic problem-solving, and movement-oriented advocacy. You will engage closely with clients operating under resource constraints while navigating high-stakes legal environments. This is a remote, high-impact role within a collaborative and purpose-driven legal program.

Accountabilities:

In this role, you will provide comprehensive legal counsel to tax-exempt organizations and reproductive healthcare stakeholders, acting as a trusted advisor across a broad portfolio of operational and compliance matters.

  • Provide legal advice on corporate and nonprofit matters, including formation, governance, compliance, employment law (multi-state), contracts, grants, lobbying, and data privacy/security
  • Conduct in-depth legal research, analysis, and drafting of legal memoranda, agreements, and policy guidance
  • Support clients in navigating complex regulatory environments affecting healthcare access and nonprofit operations
  • Maintain strong, responsive, and trusted relationships with client organizations
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments relevant to reproductive healthcare and tax-exempt organizations
  • Conduct intake interviews with prospective clients and assess legal needs
  • Represent the program at conferences, convenings, and external speaking engagements
  • (Senior Counsel) Supervise and mentor junior attorneys, fellows, and interns, as needed
  • Contribute to a collaborative internal culture aligned with organizational mission and values
  • Requirements:

    Candidates should bring strong experience in nonprofit or tax-exempt organization legal work, with the ability to advise across a wide range of corporate and operational legal issues in fast-moving environments.

    • Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent law degree
    • Active license to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction and good standing with the bar
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience as in-house counsel or external counsel for tax-exempt organizations, or equivalent experience advising nonprofit clients
    • Strong knowledge of nonprofit law, corporate governance, employment law (multi-state), contracts, data privacy, and regulatory compliance
    • Experience with or commitment to reproductive health, rights, and justice strongly preferred
    • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills with the ability to simplify complex issues
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and perform effectively under pressure
    • Excellent communication skills with diverse stakeholders and clients
    • High attention to detail and sound legal judgment in evolving regulatory contexts
    • (Senior Counsel) At least 2 years of supervisory or mentoring experience is preferred
