Job Description

As part of the Thermo Fisher Scientific team, you’ll discover meaningful work that makes a positive impact on a global scale. Join our colleagues in bringing our Mission to life every single day to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. We provide our global teams with the resources needed to achieve individual career goals while helping to take science a step beyond by developing solutions for some of the world’s toughest challenges, like protecting the environment, making sure our food is safe or helping find cures for cancer.

Description
Join our team at Thermo Fisher Scientific as a Data Scientist III and contribute to global healthcare and scientific innovation. You'll apply advanced analytics, machine learning, and AI techniques to solve complex business challenges across our enterprise. In our collaborative environment, you'll develop and deploy sophisticated data science solutions that drive operational efficiencies and enhance decision-making capabilities. The Scientist III will help define and deliver a practical bioprocess digital twin roadmap, including data strategy, model development, validation, deployment, and cross-functional adoption. This role offers the opportunity to work with advanced technologies while contributing to our mission of enabling customers to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development of digital twin models for CHO cell culture and upstream bioprocess workflows, including fed-batch and perfusion applications.
  • Build predictive simulation capabilities for nutrient depletion, metabolite accumulation, cell growth, productivity, process drift, CQAs, and scale-up behavior.
  • Develop hybrid modeling workflows that combine mechanistic approaches such as stoichiometric modeling, kinetic modeling, MFA/FBA, and mass balance methods with AI, machine learning, and Bayesian optimization.
  • Enable virtual experimentation by simulating candidate feed strategies, pH strategies, temperature shifts, and other process conditions to prioritize the most promising experimental paths.
  • Define data requirements, validation strategies, model governance practices, and success criteria for predictive and simulation-based workflows.
  • Support real-time or near-real-time forecasting use cases by incorporating bioreactor and process data to detect deviations early and recommend corrective actions.

Education

  • Master's Degree in Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Computational Biology, Systems Biology, Bioinformatics, Cell Biology, or a related field.
  • PhD in a relevant discipline is preferred.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Strong industry or advanced academic experience in bioprocess development, cell culture, process modeling, digital biomanufacturing, computational biology, or related scientific domains.
  • Deep understanding of upstream bioprocessing, including CHO cell culture, metabolism, feeding strategies, bioreactor operations, CPP/CQA relationships, and scale-up considerations.
  • Advanced Python experience for scientific computing, simulation, data analysis, workflow automation, and visualization.
  • Experience developing mechanistic, statistical, machine learning, optimization, forecasting, or hybrid modeling workflows for biological or process systems.
  • Experience working with complex bioprocess datasets, including time-series process data, offline assays, spent media or omics data, process metadata, and experimental design data.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional technical projects and translate scientific challenges into deployable digital solutions.

Preferred

  • Experience with PAT systems, bioreactor data platforms, LIMS/ELN/MES/historian systems, cloud data environments, or model deployment and governance practices is a plus.
