Senior Proxy Engineer
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Proxy Engineer based in India.
This role sits at the heart of large-scale internet traffic engineering, where you will design and operate high-performance proxy infrastructure that powers secure, reliable, and scalable data flow across enterprise systems. You will work deeply at the HTTP and network protocol layers, building systems that handle complex traffic routing, TLS termination, and advanced request/response transformations. The position requires strong expertise in backend systems engineering, with a focus on building production-grade proxy services in Go and extending functionality through Lua scripting. You will own critical components of traffic handling, including forward and reverse proxy pipelines, API gateway behaviors, and protocol translation layers. The environment is highly technical and performance-driven, requiring precision in handling edge cases across modern web protocols like HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, and HTTP/3. You will collaborate with senior engineers to ensure observability, reliability, and security across all traffic flows. This is a high-impact role shaping how global-scale systems communicate securely and efficiently.
Accountabilities:
- Architect, design, and implement high-performance forward, reverse, and transparent proxy systems using Go, ensuring modular separation of connection, protocol, routing, and upstream layers.
- Build and maintain full proxy pipelines including connection handling, TLS termination, protocol detection, routing logic, request/response transformation, and upstream load balancing.
- Manage complete connection lifecycles, including keep-alive behavior, graceful shutdown, connection draining, and migration strategies for zero-downtime deployments.
- Implement advanced traffic control mechanisms such as retries, circuit breakers, timeout hierarchies, request hedging, and adaptive concurrency controls.
- Design scalable upstream connection pooling strategies with health checks, idle management, and high-availability failover.
- Handle HTTP protocol correctness across HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, and HTTP/3 including edge cases, multiplexing, flow control, and streaming behaviors.
- Implement secure and efficient request/response header manipulation pipelines with strict compliance to protocol semantics.
- Support proxying for WebSockets, gRPC, SOCKS, and CONNECT-based HTTPS traffic with full lifecycle and streaming support.
- Apply strong security practices including mitigation of request smuggling, response splitting, and protocol desynchronization attacks.
- Contribute to observability and diagnostics using tools such as OpenTelemetry for deep system-level visibility.
- 6+ years of experience in backend systems, networking, or infrastructure engineering with strong proxy or distributed systems exposure.
- Strong programming expertise in Go, with additional experience in Lua scripting for runtime extensibility.
- Deep understanding of HTTP protocol internals, including HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, and HTTP/3 specifications.
- Hands-on experience designing or operating proxy systems, API gateways, or high-throughput network services.
- Strong knowledge of TLS, connection management, load balancing, and traffic routing strategies.
- Familiarity with distributed systems concepts such as concurrency, scalability, fault tolerance, and performance optimization.
- Experience handling complex networking scenarios including WebSockets, gRPC, and streaming protocols.
- Understanding of observability tools and practices, ideally including OpenTelemetry.
- Strong problem-solving skills with attention to low-level system behavior and edge cases.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills in cross-functional engineering environments.
- Competitive compensation package aligned with senior engineering roles.
- Flexible remote-friendly work environment.
- Comprehensive health insurance coverage and wellness programs.
- Opportunity to work on high-scale, mission-critical internet infrastructure.
- Exposure to advanced networking, protocol engineering, and distributed systems challenges.
- Strong culture of technical ownership, autonomy, and innovation.
- Global collaboration with highly experienced infrastructure and security engineers.
- Career growth opportunities in cutting-edge security and networking technologies.
