This opportunity is designed for highly experienced mainframe professionals who want to apply their expertise in a unique and impactful way. Rather than building traditional enterprise applications, you will evaluate complex technical scenarios and help improve the capabilities of advanced AI systems operating in specialized engineering environments. Working remotely with flexible scheduling, you will leverage deep knowledge of COBOL, IBM z/OS ecosystems, and mission-critical infrastructure to assess technical accuracy, code quality, and engineering practices. Accountabilities
- Evaluate complex COBOL engineering tasks and technical scenarios using real-world production standards and best practices.
- Review code-level implementations and provide detailed, structured assessments regarding correctness, maintainability, and technical quality.
- Analyze mainframe-related systems involving IBM z/OS, JCL, CICS, VSAM, DB2, and other enterprise technologies.
- Work within containerized development environments, executing and interpreting automated tests, validation procedures, and CI-style workflows.
- Produce clear written explanations that justify technical decisions, recommendations, and evaluations.
- Complete project-based assignments within defined timelines while maintaining a high standard of accuracy and consistency.
- Contribute expert insights that help improve AI system performance within legacy and mission-critical computing environments.
- Demonstrate ownership, adaptability, and responsiveness as project priorities and workloads evolve.
- Minimum 8 years of professional COBOL development experience in IBM mainframe (z/OS) production environments.
- Strong hands-on expertise with JCL, CICS, VSAM, DB2, and large-scale enterprise applications.
- Experience supporting critical systems within industries such as banking, insurance, government, or other highly regulated sectors.
- Solid understanding of software engineering principles, code quality standards, and system reliability practices.
- Familiarity with Linux-based environments, Docker containers, automated testing frameworks, and CI/CD concepts, or the ability to quickly become proficient in these areas.
- Ability to assess not only how code functions but also why specific implementations are correct, efficient, and aligned with industry standards.
- Excellent analytical thinking, troubleshooting, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to articulate technical reasoning clearly and concisely.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while maintaining accountability and productivity.
- Comfortable adapting to variable project workloads and occasional weekend availability when required.
- Competitive hourly compensation ranging from $130 to $210 per hour, based on experience and expertise.
