The Equipment Engineer is responsible for ensuring the reliability, availability, and compliance of Quality Control (QC) laboratory test equipment. This role supports day-to-day laboratory operations by performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting equipment issues, coordinating repairs, and maintaining equipment documentation in accordance with regulatory and quality requirements.

Working closely with the QC team, the Equipment Engineer helps ensure laboratory equipment remains operational, properly calibrated, and capable of delivering accurate and reliable test results that support product quality and manufacturing continuity.

A Day in the Life

  • Perform installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of QC laboratory test equipment.

  • Execute preventive maintenance activities to maximize equipment reliability and minimize downtime.

  • Coordinate equipment repairs, including ordering and managing spare parts to support timely restoration of equipment.

  • Maintain equipment service logs, maintenance records, and documentation accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Partner closely with the QC team to resolve equipment issues and provide timely communication on repair status and follow-up actions.

  • Ensure all maintenance tools and test equipment are properly maintained and calibrated.

  • Support the introduction, qualification, and transfer of new QC test systems, including providing user training where required.

  • Utilize established escalation processes to resolve equipment-related issues impacting laboratory operations.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment reliability and maintenance effectiveness.

  • Assist the Quality Manager with assigned projects and operational activities.

  • Comply with all Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), Quality, and applicable regulatory requirements, including ISO 13485 and FDA regulations.

Keys to Success

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Science, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience servicing, maintaining, and repairing scientific or laboratory equipment.

  • Experience working within a regulated manufacturing, laboratory, medical device, biotechnology, or pharmaceutical environment is preferred.

  • Experience supporting preventive maintenance and equipment troubleshooting activities.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical problem-solving skills.

  • Working knowledge of quality tools such as trend analysis and regression charts.

  • Excellent planning, organization, and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical issues clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a cross-functional team.

  • Resourceful, self-motivated, and results-oriented with strong attention to detail.

  • Willingness to provide after-hours support when equipment troubleshooting or repairs are required.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

  • Work is primarily performed within a laboratory and manufacturing environment.

  • May require prolonged standing, occasional lifting of equipment or components, and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Occasional flexibility in working hours may be required to support critical equipment maintenance and operational needs.
