Regional Director, Employee Relations

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Regional Director, Employee Relations based in the United States.

This is a senior enterprise Employee Relations leadership role responsible for shaping and executing regional ER strategy across a large, multi-state operational footprint. The position sits at the intersection of people risk management, compliance, and business leadership, ensuring consistent, fair, and legally sound employee relations practices across distributed field operations. You will lead and develop a team of ER leaders while acting as a trusted advisor to senior executives on complex workforce issues, regulatory exposure, and organizational risk. The role requires deep expertise in high-volume, multi-jurisdiction employee relations environments, particularly within highly regulated labor markets. You will play a critical role in strengthening manager capability, improving workplace culture, and driving consistent resolution of sensitive employee matters. This is a highly visible leadership position with direct influence on operational stability and organizational integrity.

Accountabilities:

  • Lead and develop a distributed team of Employee Relations leaders, ensuring consistent case management standards, coaching, and capability-building across multiple states and business units.
  • Serve as the regional authority on employee relations strategy, employee risk mitigation, and complex investigations, ensuring timely, fair, and legally compliant resolution of workplace issues.
  • Act as a senior advisor to business leaders, translating ER data, trends, and insights into actionable strategies that improve decision-making and reduce organizational risk.
  • Oversee high-complexity employee relations cases, ensuring appropriate escalation handling, documentation, and resolution of sensitive workplace matters.
  • Drive compliance with employment regulations, with deep focus on California labor law, wage and hour requirements, and multi-state legal frameworks.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Legal, Operations, and People teams to manage regulatory inquiries, audits, and agency investigations.
  • Design and deliver manager training and capability programs to strengthen leadership effectiveness and reduce recurring ER issues.
  • Requirements:

    • 10+ years of progressive Human Resources or Employee Relations experience, including senior-level leadership responsibility in multi-state, high-volume environments.
    • Deep expertise in California employment law, including wage and hour compliance, investigations, and regulatory risk management.
    • Proven experience leading and developing ER or HR teams across geographically distributed operations.
    • Strong background managing complex employee relations cases from intake through resolution, including investigations and executive-level escalation.
    • Ability to influence senior leaders, build trust quickly, and operate effectively in high-stakes or ambiguous situations.
    • Strong analytical capability with experience using ER metrics and workforce data to inform strategy and improve outcomes.
    • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex HR/legal concepts into clear guidance for business leaders.
    • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced HR certification or graduate degree preferred.
