Content Writer and Creator
At Octopus Energy for Business, we’re redefining the energy market for UK businesses. We already support over 120,000 customers — but we’re only just getting started.
Here’s the headline: we’re reinventing Britain’s business energy market. We reject brokers, deliver great value, give outrageously good customer service, and create smart products like Shape Shifters and Electric Match that help businesses take control of their energy.
As part of the wider Octopus Energy Group, we’re using technology, renewables and flexibility to help businesses cut costs and carbon at the same time.
Now, we’re ready to turn things up a notch. We want more businesses to know there’s a better option — and that’s where you come in.
We’re looking for a powerful communicator to help make business energy simple, clear and fun for customers. Someone who can cut through the complex, ditch formalities, and write for humans: without trying to be a novelist. Someone who chooses clarity over ‘flowery’ and knows how to find the sweet spot between serious, silly, and sincere.
We need someone who can react fast, write brilliantly at speed, and spin lots of plates at once. We want someone who thinks awfully hard about people. What they care about, how they think, and how they might respond. Someone who can easily spot when the words aren’t pulling their weight – and make them do bicep curls.
What you'll do
-
Create stuff: We’re a small content team, so you’ll need to be comfortable doing a range of things. Social posts, FAQs, videos, persuasive emails, blogs and articles - you name it.
-
Write compelling things: You’ll turn the drab and complex into something simple, engaging and easy to understand – adding moments of joy where you can.
-
Sharpen messaging: Develop, update and sharpen customer comms (of all types, from email to website help guide to app UX) so they really hit the mark.
-
Make great video: Script, create and edit videos that inform, entertain and engage.
-
Put the spotlight on our customers: Create content about our customers to showcase (a) their positive experiences and (b) our great products.
-
Inform the public: Create informative and practical customer guides to support businesses’ education of energy
-
Use data to amplify our messages: Collect and analyse our content’s performance data, using it to improve what we have and identify gaps to fill
-
Take initiative: Talk to customers and our energy specialists, listen to the market. Use that intel to fine-tune our comms and create great campaigns.
-
Work with autonomy: Manage your own workload without prescriptive briefs or account managers, and happily jump on any projects that come your way.
What you'll need
Previous experience as a writer or copywriter – or just a natural talent with words. (We care more about skill and passion for the mission than about where you are in your career.)
A knack for making the complex simple and improving communications
SEO experience – both writing for it and analysing ranking
Skill with video and graphic design software – like Canva, Figma and the Adobe suite
A deep understanding of people, how they think and how they engage with content and social media
A finger on the pulse for content trends
To be T-shaped. In other words, you’re adaptable and happy to have a crack at everything
What you should know:
We rarely use agencies for anything. We have our own in-house designers, UX, copywriters and front-end developers. We do our own media buying. You’ll have the autonomy to get things live quickly, test, learn and improve — working closely with a creative team that moves at pace. You like shipping, not polishing.
Content is 24/7 and Octopus is famous for its customer service. This doesn’t mean you’ll work all the time, but if you are keen on flexible working over clocking in and out, this is more likely to be a job for you. You’ll work with freedom and responsibility. You'll get a lot of trust to run with ideas and take ownership of what you do. We're all grown ups, so we don't count your holidays here. We work hard and so we know you need to play hard as well.
