This role supports mission-critical Earth observation and ocean satellite data systems used to process and deliver scientific data for environmental monitoring and research.
You will contribute to the operation, maintenance, and enhancement of satellite data processing pipelines that support national-level oceanographic programs.
The position blends scientific computing, software engineering, and data operations within a highly technical and impact-driven environment.
You will work on improving data processing workflows, ensuring system reliability, and supporting the generation of high-quality geospatial data products.
A key focus is translating complex scientific and environmental data into usable outputs through robust software systems and automation.
You will collaborate with engineers and scientists to enhance operational systems and support continuous improvements in data delivery.
This is a hands-on technical role contributing directly to Earth observation capabilities and scientific decision-making.

Accountabilities:

In this role, you will support the operation, development, and optimization of ocean satellite data processing systems and scientific software tools.

  • Operate, maintain, and monitor ocean satellite data processing systems to ensure continuous and reliable performance
  • Troubleshoot data processing issues and monitor data flows across scientific pipelines
  • Develop enhancements and improvements to existing systems, including contributions to new system designs
  • Manage source code, version control, and software updates using Git or GitLab
  • Support the creation, testing, and maintenance of scientific data products such as HDF and NetCDF outputs
  • Perform software testing, validation, and quality assurance for scientific applications
  • Develop technical documentation and support user-facing and internal system documentation
  • Assist in the design and improvement of data management, delivery, and visualization systems
  • Support Earth observation data rendering, processing, and distribution workflows
  • Contribute to ongoing operational improvements and system optimization initiatives
  • Requirements:

    This role requires strong programming skills, scientific data experience, and the ability to work with complex geospatial and environmental datasets in a technical environment.

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Oceanography, Information Systems, or related field
    • 4+ years of programming experience in languages such as Python, Java, C, Perl, JavaScript, or UNIX shell scripting
    • Strong proficiency in UNIX/Linux operating systems
    • Experience with Git or GitLab version control systems
    • Experience working with geospatial, satellite, or image-based data processing
    • Familiarity with scientific data formats such as HDF and NetCDF
    • Knowledge of relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL
    • Understanding of web technologies and data delivery systems
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
    • Experience in NOAA or environmental data systems is a plus
