Senior Superconducting IC Designer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Superconducting IC Designer based in Canada.

This is a rare opportunity to contribute directly to the design of cutting-edge superconducting integrated circuits that power next-generation quantum computing systems. In this role, you will work at the intersection of physics, electrical engineering, and advanced computing, helping to shape the architecture and performance of some of the most complex quantum processors ever built. You will collaborate closely with scientists, device engineers, and software specialists to design, model, and optimize superconducting devices that enable scalable quantum computation. The environment is highly technical, research-driven, and collaborative, requiring curiosity, rigor, and comfort with ambiguity. Your work will directly influence the performance, reliability, and scalability of quantum computing hardware deployed globally. This position is ideal for engineers and physicists passionate about deep technical challenges and breakthrough innovation in quantum technologies.

Accountabilities

  • Design, model, and optimize superconducting integrated circuit layouts used in quantum processor architectures.
  • Develop and improve the performance of superconducting devices such as Josephson junctions, SQUIDs, qubits, resonators, SFQ gates, and related structures.
  • Use and enhance specialized Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools and workflows for superconducting IC design.
  • Perform verification of IC designs to ensure correctness, manufacturability, and alignment with performance requirements.
  • Build and apply analytical and numerical models to simulate device behavior and predict system-level performance.
  • Investigate and address design challenges related to quantum processor environments, including cryogenics, packaging, and electronics integration.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams in processor development, physics, and engineering to advance hardware capabilities.
  • Debug complex technical issues in both individual and shared design workstreams.
  • Document designs, methodologies, and findings clearly for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development of novel device architectures and topologies to improve quantum processor performance and scalability.
  • Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a closely related technical field (advanced degree preferred).
    • Strong experience in integrated circuit design within an R&D environment, including analog or RF circuit design.
    • Solid understanding of applied electromagnetics and the physics of electrical systems.
    • Hands-on experience with modeling, simulation, and verification of complex hardware systems.
    • Strong programming skills with demonstrated ability to contribute to collaborative codebases and technical tooling.
    • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities with persistence in tackling highly complex technical challenges.
    • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams and explain technical concepts clearly.
    • Experience with superconducting devices, qubit design, or quantum hardware is highly desirable.
    • Familiarity with RF/microwave design, cryogenic systems, or advanced IC device technologies is a strong plus.
    • Experience with EDA tools at scale and understanding of verification methodologies is preferred.
    • Knowledge of programming languages such as Python, Common Lisp, or Cadence SKILL is an advantage.
    • Strong interest in quantum computing, hardware innovation, and advanced scientific engineering problems.
