Staff Software Engineer - MetaMask (Money Movement)
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer - MetaMask (Money Movement) based in the United States.
This is a senior technical leadership role focused on building and scaling the fiat-to-crypto and money movement infrastructure powering one of the most widely used Web3 wallets in the world. You will shape the architecture behind critical user flows that connect traditional financial systems with decentralized applications. The role blends deep systems engineering with product-facing execution, requiring strong ownership over reliability, security, and performance at scale. You will guide complex, cross-platform initiatives spanning backend services, mobile, and web experiences. Operating in a highly collaborative, remote-first environment, you will work alongside engineers, product managers, and designers to deliver seamless payment experiences for millions of users. This is a high-impact role for an engineer who thrives in ambiguous, fast-evolving environments and enjoys solving hard problems at the intersection of fintech and Web3.
Accountabilities:
- Lead the technical direction and system design for fiat-to-crypto and money movement infrastructure, ensuring scalable, secure, and high-performance user flows.
- Architect and build backend and full-stack systems integrating with third-party payment providers and financial infrastructure APIs.
- Own key architectural decisions impacting revenue-generating payment flows across MetaMask’s ecosystem.
- Guide and mentor junior and mid-level engineers across backend, frontend, mobile, and desktop development tracks.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, analysts, and engineering teams to deliver cross-platform features.
- Ensure system reliability through strong observability, monitoring, testing, and incident response practices.
- Maintain high engineering standards through code reviews, design discussions, documentation, and best practices enforcement.
- Partner with mobile and extension platform teams to ensure consistent, unified money movement experiences across devices.
- Drive performance, security, and edge-case handling across complex financial transaction systems.
- 5+ years of full-stack or backend engineering experience, with prior experience in a senior or Staff-level technical role.
- Strong expertise in TypeScript, Node.js, and modern web or cross-platform technologies (including mobile frameworks such as React Native).
- Proven experience designing and scaling distributed systems, ideally involving financial transactions or payments infrastructure.
- Experience integrating third-party APIs and working with fintech, payments, or financial services systems.
- Strong track record of technical leadership, architectural ownership, and cross-team collaboration.
- Deep understanding of system reliability, security considerations, and failure modes in production systems.
- Experience mentoring engineers and driving execution across multiple workstreams.
- Strong communication skills in remote-first, globally distributed teams.
- Commitment to clean code, testing practices, and maintainable system design.
- Familiarity with Web3 concepts such as wallets, DeFi, or fiat on/off-ramp systems is a strong plus.
- Competitive compensation within a US base salary range of $146,000–$218,000 (excluding bonus and equity)
- Equity participation and performance-based incentives
- Fully remote, global-first working environment
- Comprehensive healthcare coverage and wellness support
- Flexible time off and strong work-life balance culture
- Opportunity to work on high-scale Web3 infrastructure used by tens of millions of users
- Career growth in a cutting-edge blockchain and fintech ecosystem
- Collaborative, mission-driven engineering culture with high autonomy and ownership.
