Job Summary
The Senior Mechanical Engineer leads and coordinates all facets of product development and sustainment projects from concept through commercialization. Serving as the primary mechanical engineering lead for assigned programs, this role is responsible for the successful execution of development, validation, and launch activities, delivering high-quality solutions on time, within scope, and aligned to customer, business, and technical requirements.
This position requires strong technical expertise in mechanical design and electromechanical systems, along with the ability to provide senior-level engineering leadership across cross-functional teams. The Senior Mechanical Engineer is expected to drive innovation, guide design decisions, manage technical risk, support continuous improvement, and mentor less experienced engineers while ensuring products are robust, manufacturable, and compliant with applicable standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Lead the mechanical engineering effort for product development and sustainment initiatives from initial concept through product release and market launch.
Serve as the primary mechanical engineering point of contact for assigned projects, ensuring successful execution of all development, validation, and launch activities.
Innovate, prototype, and test new concepts, mechanisms, and assemblies used in automated inventory control and industrial smart storage systems.
Collaborate with electrical, software, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and product management teams to define requirements and develop integrated electromechanical solutions.
Translate product specifications, customer needs, and business objectives into practical, reliable, and manufacturable mechanical designs.
Develop detailed 3D models, 2D drawings, renderings, bills of materials, test specifications, engineering change notices, and related technical documentation.
Perform engineering analysis related to motion, fit, tolerance stack-up, stress, force, thermal considerations, pneumatic systems, and overall mechanical performance.
Ensure designs meet functional, reliability, safety, regulatory, cost, and manufacturability requirements.
Coordinate development activities with internal teams, suppliers, contract manufacturers, and other external resources as needed.
Support the full product lifecycle, including concept development, design verification, testing, documentation, pilot builds, production release, commercialization, and post-launch support.
Review and approve engineering drawings, parts lists, and technical documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company and industry standards.
Identify technical risks early, develop mitigation plans, and drive timely resolution of design and project issues.
Lead root cause investigations and corrective action efforts related to product performance, manufacturing issues, and field concerns.
Provide design support for intellectual property development, including collaboration with patent counsel on invention disclosures, technical abstracts, and claims.
Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, design practices, documentation quality, and product development execution.
Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance, design review support, and best-practice coaching to strengthen team capability.
Contribute to project planning, scheduling, and status communication to help ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited college or university required.
7-10 years of mechanical engineering experience, preferably in product development for electromechanical or industrial systems.
Strong mechanical engineering aptitude with broad knowledge of electromechanical systems and industrial product design.
Demonstrated expertise in sheet metal design, rotating assemblies, power transmission, gearing, bearings, fits and finishes, material selection, GD&T, injection molding, machining, and manufacturing principles.
Experience with tolerance analysis, mechanism design, structural and motion-related analysis, and design for manufacturability and assembly.
Experience designing in 3D CAD and creating detailed 2D drawings; Creo and Catia strongly preferred.
Proficient in PLM tools such as 3DX and Windchill.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify root causes and implement effective corrective actions.
Ability to lead technical projects and deliver results on time and within budget.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across functions and influence stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to mentor others, lead by example, and contribute positively to team performance and engineering culture.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications
Masters degree in Mechanical Engineer or equivalent Hands-on prototyping, machining, and testing experience.
Experience with product data management and project management tools such as Windchill, Microsoft Project, SharePoint, Asana, SAP, or similar systems.
Experience supporting supplier collaboration, manufacturing readiness, and product commercialization activities.
Familiarity with intellectual property support and patent-related engineering documentation.
Experience in continuous improvement, cost optimization, and design standardization initiatives.
Core Competencies
Mechanical system design and integration
Product development and lifecycle ownership
Design for manufacturability and assembly
Engineering analysis and problem solving
Technical leadership and mentoring
