This role sits at the intersection of cultural heritage, environmental compliance, and large-scale infrastructure development, leading efforts to identify, document, and protect historic and archaeological resources across diverse project types. The position plays a key role in ensuring regulatory compliance while shaping how historic environments are understood and preserved. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams spanning engineering, environmental science, planning, and GIS to deliver high-quality cultural resource outcomes. The work involves both field-based investigations and advanced research, combining hands-on documentation with technical reporting and strategic advisory support. You will also contribute to stakeholder engagement with agencies, clients, and preservation authorities at federal, state, and local levels. This is a dynamic role suited for someone who can balance technical precision with storytelling and cultural interpretation. Travel is expected and supports exposure to varied sites and project contexts across the country.
Accountabilities
- Lead and support historic preservation and cultural resource management activities across federal, state, municipal, and private-sector projects, ensuring compliance with applicable preservation laws and standards.
- Conduct archival research, historic context development, and field investigations including surveys, photographic documentation, and cemetery or burial ground assessments.
- Prepare technical documentation such as historic resource evaluations, survey forms, Section 106 compliance materials, and regulatory reports supporting project approvals.
- Coordinate with agencies and stakeholders including SHPOs, THPOs, and federal partners to ensure alignment with regulatory requirements and project objectives.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including archaeologists, planners, engineers, GIS specialists, and environmental professionals to integrate cultural resources into broader project delivery.
- Contribute to proposal development, client communications, public-facing interpretation materials, and knowledge-sharing deliverables such as story maps and exhibits.
Requirements
- Advanced degree in History, Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field, with 3–10 years of relevant professional experience in cultural resources or historic preservation.
- Strong understanding of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and associated federal, state, and local regulatory frameworks.
- Demonstrated experience in archival research, historic resource surveys, technical writing, and preparation of compliance documentation and historic evaluations.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining accuracy, attention to detail, and high-quality reporting standards.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience working alongside government agencies, clients, and multidisciplinary technical teams.
- Proficiency in tools such as GIS platforms, Adobe Creative Suite, and/or StoryMaps is highly desirable, along with familiarity with public interpretation materials.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel for fieldwork and project support activities.
