Substation Physical Designer (Inventor)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Substation Physical Designer (Inventor) based in Canada.

In this role, you will contribute to the design and development of electrical substation layouts supporting both distribution and transmission projects within the 12kV to 69kV+ range. You will be responsible for producing high-quality engineering drawings and 3D models that support safe, reliable, and efficient power delivery infrastructure. The position involves working across multidisciplinary teams to ensure design accuracy, compliance with client standards, and alignment with project requirements. You will play a key role in transforming engineering concepts into detailed physical designs including layouts, schematics, and construction-ready documentation. This is a remote-first role that requires strong autonomy, technical precision, and the ability to manage multiple design deliverables independently. You will collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and clients in a fast-paced environment focused on continuous improvement and engineering excellence.

Accountabilities:

  • Develop and prepare detailed substation physical design drawings including one-line and three-line diagrams, general arrangement layouts, grounding plans, conduit layouts, and control building configurations.
  • Produce technical deliverables such as AC/DC schematics, relay diagrams, cable schedules, SCADA/communication diagrams, and substation panel layouts.
  • Create and maintain 3D models and design packages using tools such as Inventor, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, and Bluebeam.
  • Develop bill of materials based on design specifications and ensure accuracy across all engineering documentation.
  • Coordinate with physical, protection & controls, and drafting teams to ensure consistency and quality of deliverables.
  • Apply client-specific engineering standards and ensure compliance with QA/QC processes across all design outputs.
  • Support client meetings, site visits, and data collection activities when required to inform design development.
  • Review and integrate vendor documentation into design packages while ensuring constructability and technical accuracy.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts and mentor junior designers where applicable.
  • Requirements:

    • Associate’s degree in Drafting, Design, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field (or equivalent experience).
    • 2+ years of experience in substation physical design, with strong proficiency in Autodesk Inventor.
    • Hands-on experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, Bluebeam, and related design tools.
    • Strong understanding of substation design principles, electrical layout standards, and engineering drafting practices.
    • Ability to interpret engineering concepts and translate them into accurate technical drawings and 3D models.
    • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines independently.
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills for working with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel) for documentation and reporting.
