Head of Category Management

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Head of Category Management based in the United States.

This senior leadership role owns the strategic direction and performance of category management across a large-scale e-commerce organization. You will define long-term category vision, drive enterprise-wide merchandising strategy, and influence key business outcomes across revenue, margin, and growth. The role blends analytical rigor with commercial leadership, requiring strong financial acumen and the ability to translate data into actionable strategy. You will lead and develop a high-performing team of category professionals while shaping frameworks, processes, and best practices across the organization. Acting as a key partner to executive leadership, you will guide vendor strategy, assortment decisions, and cross-functional initiatives. This is a high-impact role where your decisions directly shape customer experience and business performance at scale.

Accountabilities:

  • Define and own the long-term category vision aligned with business strategy and financial goals
  • Identify and drive enterprise-level growth, innovation, and competitive advantage opportunities
  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing category management team
  • Establish category frameworks, processes, and best practices across the organization
  • Oversee category strategy execution across multiple product lines for consistency and alignment
  • Approve key assortment decisions, vendor partnerships, and product launches
  • Lead vendor negotiations and long-term supplier relationship management
  • Own category financial performance including revenue, margin, forecasting, and profitability
  • Partner with executive leadership and cross-functional teams to drive strategic initiatives
  • Present insights, business cases, and performance updates to senior stakeholders
  • Requirements:

    • 8+ years of experience in merchandising, category management, or related fields
    • 3+ years of experience leading and managing remote or distributed teams
    • Strong background in building and executing category strategies at scale
    • Advanced analytical skills with proficiency in Excel and retail or e-commerce data systems
    • Strong financial acumen with experience in forecasting, modeling, and performance tracking
    • Excellent communication and executive presence with ability to influence senior stakeholders
    • Proven ability to manage complex, fast-changing environments and competing priorities
    • Strong leadership skills with experience mentoring and developing high-performing teams
    • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience)
